Hi all,
I just got a NIB TEAC A3340S made in 1976. I just had the machine checked over by Sam Palermo, and he said the heads had never been used, the motors were in top notch shape, the machine was up to date on calibration and head alignment, the capacitors had very recently been replaced, and the mechanical side of things was great. All the machine needed was some oil on the motors, a few minor mechanical adjustments, and it was good to go! The machine sounds amazing at 15 IPS, and is an amazing multitrack recorder. The heads were tested for frequency response, and here's how they rated: 20 Hz-24kHz at 15 IPS, and 25 Hz-20kHz at 7 1/2 IPS. The machine is amazing. I also own an Ampex 300 3 track tube recorder that's big as a fridge, too. The TEAC A3340S has lots of hiss at 15 IPS, but I found a way to reduce hiss by finding the "sweet spot" in volume between my audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2,) and my tape deck. The machine sounds amazing, and does a great job of reproducing the recordings that were just made.
Thank you,
Ryan
