Hello to all,

I am about to buy a sub for my home theater system. It's currently composed by an old Denon AVR 1706, two Triangle Elara LN01 and one Elara LN02 for the central one.

I have roughly 200€ budget. I hesitate between those 3 subs

1) Highland Audio Dilis 440SW. It looks great because it has a lot of settings at the rear, crossover, basse extension, phase (45, 90, 130, 180). But i do not really know if i need all these settings. The most important is the crossover and i can define with the receiver.

2) Yamaha NS-SW050 looks great too. I like its frequency response start to 35 Hz, but it has almost no settings, only the volume, i do not know if it's important.

3) Klipsch Reference R-8SW

Which one could be nice with my Denon receiver ? Are the settings are the rear important (not the volume) as i can define the crossover frequency on the sub ?

Thanks a lot for your help

I don't think you will find anyone who could fairly say which sub is the right choice among those. The amp plate settings are not terrible important since that can all be adjusted within the AVR. I would go for whichever subwoofer is the physically largest, since that could at least mean it has some measure of efficiency.

We really need more information. How big of a room are you trying to fill? Those are some tiny subs so I'm hoping it is a small room.

How far are you sitting from the speakers?

Also, that is a VERY old receiver, but should have all the crossover settings you'll need. I'd consider replacing that soon.

Thanks for you reply.

I give more information. The room is indeed a small room, about 25 m², I usually sit 3,5 meters from the speakers, and i live in a flat, i have neighbours down and up :) So, i will not put the volume very high. So, in this condition, do you think a small sub would be ok ?

You are right when you say my receiver i very old, that's true. But, does the sound of a modern receiver would be really that better ? Of course, i could have more possibilities with a modern recevier : ethernet/wifi connection, streaming for Qobuz, a mordern OSD etc... Well, but i do not know if i will have a truly better sound with something like Denon AVR-X1500H or a Marantz 1509/1609 NR. Maybe you know ?

As you can notice, i am quite attracted to Denon/Marantz, because i think it's a good combination with my Triangle speakers, but I am not really sure, maybe Yamaha, Onkyo or others would be better, do you have any ideas ? I use my system for 50% music and 50% movies, and I have a hifi Qobuz account.

Thanks again for your inputs

Go to a box store. Pick out a reciever, listen to it. make sure you have return period, then if you dont like it. Return it. That's what I do.
