Marantz 8802a problem

I thought you and Gene are the only two who have such an expensive beast! Denon was smart to stop making those things long ago. I am curious to see if Marantz will be next.

If sales of the AV8805 decline dramatically (or repairs increase), it may happen.

I'm curious to know if @M Code has repair records of Pre-pros.

All I can say is, my AV7005, AV8801 are about 8 and 4/5 years old, and are still 100%. But then, all my Denon AVRs, including the 13 year old one are still also 100% working. So I guess YMMV still applies..

Yeah, luck plays a lot in life.

Perhaps now the odds are against me, so I have to stick to better odds.

Perfect! You obviously know what you are doing, as so far everything looks right (connections, settings, tried different inputs made no difference, microprocessor total reset done, and presumably updated FW,.. etc.),so most likely there is something wrong with the HDMI board, at least regarding the HDMI 3 not working issue.

I know it is inconvenient, and the unit is quite heavy, but for such an expensive unit, imperfection is unacceptable. They obviously must fix the HDMI 3, possibly by replacing the whole board. The audio drop out issue may not be related to the HDMI board, being intermittent, it is important that you really emphasize the issue and insist on them letting you know what they are going to do about it, and fixed it so that you don't have to send it in the second time.

Such flag ship AVP are now getting ridiculously expensive, and that's why I replaced my 8801 with a C$1143 AVR-X4400H so that I can replace it every 2-3 years if I really want to keep up with the newest features, or not, without feeling much pain. In the US you get 5 years warranty but in Canada we only get 3 years. so that's any worry, and downside for the high cost AVP option. So far I found absolutely no audible difference between the two units. In fact the new AVR's (at 1/3 the cost) may be more accurate in bass response, post Audyssey calibration.

I have found no audible difference between Dolby Atmos and DTSma or may I say old 7.1 compared to new 7.1 since Atmos has come out. I am really trying to hear a difference but my ears can not hear it. Over here in Oz we get a 3 year warranty(I think).

Oh, there’s a huge difference. ATMOS sounds a lot louder - unless you lower the volume of all those Surround speakers.

Almost every new movie I see at my local cinema is in ATMOS. Once in a while I might hear something “cool” overhead. But most of the time it just sounds louder.

BTW, I also think 3D video is “cool”.

No, ATMOS won’t improve the Center Dialogues. There are still too many instances of me going, “What the hell did they just say? ” when I watch these ATMOS movies.

If it were up to me, I would rather they just increase the dialogue channel volume and put subtitles on screen than add 100 ATMOS speakers above my head.

I'm glad your Denon AVP-A1HD still works for you!

My AVP-A1HD finally died on me a few weeks ago after 8 YR.

Sorry to hear that, mine died also but will be getting it fixed soon. I got rid of my 8802a and have now purchased the MX160.Even with the mx160 I will never let the Denon go at any price even if it sits in the house and does nothing. I am very happy with the MX160 though. Had too many issues with the 8802a. and so soon after purchasing.

Its funny you say that, as I tend to think the same way in my Home Theatre. The thing is though with me, I could go to someone else's house and listen to their system and find that I like it. That's a great thing though, as there is always something to be learnt in home theatre and your ears and perception can differ to someone else's very very easily.

I’ve also heard enough people complaining about the Marantz AV8802a on the web.

The fact that both your ~ 8 YR old Denon AVP-A1HD and my 8 YR old Denon AVP-A1HD have malfunctioned says a lot.

Not many people own the McIntosh MX160 pre-pro, so I have not heard many complaints. So hopefully your MX160 lasts longer than ~ 8 years.

And hopefully you can find someone to fix your AVP-A1HD. I sent mine in TWICE to the main Denon Repair Center in New Jersey, and they couldn’t fix my AVP-A1HD. So good luck.

So of the 3 people I know on AH who owned the Denon AVP-A1, only Gene’s AVP-A1 didn’t die!

You went with the Marantz AV8802a, then MX160.

Gene went to the Yamaha CX-A5100 and so did I.

Oh, BTW, my AVP-A1HDCI is sitting in my living room as a souvenir next to my souvenir Toshiba HD-DVD player. It’s a museum of electronics.

Practically every single movie that I see now at my local theaters is in ATMOS. It's pretty much standard now.

Most definitely it's in ATMOS if your local theater is equipped. Is your local theater ATMOS equipped?

Around my area, ATMOS is as standard as "THX".

The first movie I saw in ATMOS was "GRAVITY" back in 2013 at my local theater. So pretty much any movie after that was ATMOS at my local theater and other theaters.

I also saw "The Hobbit II" at an ATMOS theater in Los Angeles, CA.

I was never in awe with ATMOS.

It takes a lot more than 60 speakers in the ceiling to impress me.
