Setting up new system...will my equipment work together?

I am setting up some equipment I just got...I have a Pioneer PL-990 turntable, Pioneer speakers (80W power handling, 6ohm), Sanyo DCX 1970k receiver (15 W rms, 8 ohm), Sanyo RD-5008 cassette player. Set also came with two 24W RMS, 8 ohm speakers, and a technics mixing amp. So far I have got the radio in the receiver to work well, but not the turn table. The sound is really muddy and seems to be set very loud. Not really sure what's missing here. Any tips out there? Are all of these going to work together?

With an old turntable, anything could be trouble. It probably needs a new stylus at the very least. I would not go through great lengths to get the turntable working unless you have a vinyl collection that you want to enjoy. Looks like a vintage collection of gear, so there could be trouble in any number of areas. Do the speakers sound good with say FM radio? If so, than at least you can rule out the amp and speakers as a part of the problem.

The turntable is actually new, which I think is the problem...I didn't realise it has a pre-amp and that makes it incompatible with a lot of older equipment I've been told. Hooked up a similar turntable without a pre-amp and it works fine. Just need to figure out the rest of the equipment now.

Don't plug the new tt into the phono input, select another that doesn't have the built-in phono pre-amp/RIAA eq. Or turn off the pre-amp in the tt.

Took a look at the tt's manual, it specifically says not to plug it in to a phono input due its built-in pre-amp, which I see no indication that it can be turned off. Use the aux or other line input on the receiver other than phono. Doesn't look like you can even change cartridge on this thing....
