I have def techs set up as front channels running large because they have powered subs built in and two subwoofers in the rear of room, I ran test tones in bass range of 250hz on down to 20hz had to set phase for subs to reverse on my Yamaha rsxa3070 menu to get most even response, and increased upper bass. bass seems less boomy and tighter, Yamaha's ypo,s set up doesn't say phase error regardless whether subs are set to 0 or reverse. so its a guess as to which way to run them, any suggestions?

If you don't have a way to measure the in-room response, you will have to just find out the best sound by ear. Just set it to whatever sounds best. If you want to know what is accurate, you will need a measurement microphone.

I once had the phase switch flipped on my sub accidentally and ran Audyssey, it ended up setting my sub to 4.5' even though it was 9' away, which was simply to compensate for the sub being a entire cycle behind the fronts 9' away. It shouldn't make a difference, and with an adjustable delay in the AVR, the phase switch isn't needed anyways. Only time it might be helpful is if your avr has a summed mono sub out and one sub isn't equidistant from the other, ie a sub in the front and rear of the room.

Here is a very general rule to set Phase on subwoofers.
Front Subwoofers set to ) phase.
Side Subwoofers set to 90 degrees
Rear Subwoofers set to 180 degrees.
This isn't always true but it seems to work in most rooms.

thanks for the advice it would be easier if I knew just what exactly was being sent to subs with Yamaha set to extra bass and front set to large. THANKS again.
