trying to make my mind to get the AVR this weekend. Final system would be 5.2.2 or 5.2.4

What would you guys recommend

I want at a minimum 4k, ATMOS, Dual Subwoofer, HDR, something that would be easy to calibrate the system.

Denon is my vote, only not refurb (1year warranty) but a new/open box from here:

That seem to be the better deal plus YPAO is not clear if it does dual subs individually and I read it only goes down to 31hz.

I would forget about refurbished AVRs.

Brand new Denon X4400 should hit the $799 mark later this year, especially once the X4500 comes out.

I would track the prices on Amazon.

I've already seen prices on the X3400 drop to $599 and then went up to $799 on Amazon.

Open box Like New is not refurbished. Big difference.

I could see getting a Like New Open Box.

Also, what is 5.2 ? To my knowledge there is no such thing as stereo (2.0) subs.

You are correct in that the .1 subwoofer channel is mono and unless you use a very high crossover point you are unlikely to be able to localise a pair of subwoofers. That said using two or more subwoofers is about eliminating or reducing the peaks and dips to get a more even room response. Additionally having independent settings for the pair on AVRs and Processors greatly helps in this regard.

You could use a high level speaker connections instead of the RCA on individual subs however as you suggest it is unlikely to give much of a stereo effect.

That is true. However, I think, even with two mono subwoofers, its a bit misleading to refer two them as 2.0 because 2.0 refers to two separate channels. In a 5.1 system, even if you had 3 or 4 subwoofers connected, its still a 5.1 system.
