Choosing the right sound format setting? Denon AVR-X2300W & Blu-rays

Hi,

I'm confused about the sound format settings on my Denon AVR-X2300W when watching Blu-ray movies with a 5.1 setup.

1. When I play a Blu-ray disc that has a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack, the receiver automatically outputs it as DTS-HD + Neural:X and not DTS-HD 5.1. I can however choose DTS-HD 5.1 manually. Why is that? Does it matter?
2. If a disc has a Dolby Atmos soundtrack, can I go with that or should I choose the 5.1 soundtrack? Does it matter?

Thanks in advance.

What matters is your speaker layout. If you don't have height speakers then it doesn't matter if Neural:X is active.

If there is an atmos track, use it regardless of your speaker layout.

So there is no sound information lost when the sound format/mode is made for more speakers than I have?

Additional channels get downmixed into the ones you have so you loose nothing.

Another way to think about it is the 5.1 as a base layer, 7.1 is often just a matrixed version, sometimes automatically when a 7.1 speaker setup is found in some avrs. Majority of soundtracks are still 5.1, sometimes 7.1. Just depends what you want to be able to take advantage of....
