Music for healing and pain

Study confirms:

Altogether, they found that playing music was associated with lower anxiety and pain ratings, regardless of the type of surgery performed, the age or gender of the patient, and when the music was actually played. Compared to controls, there was an average 21-point decrease in anxiety on a 1 to 100 scale, and a 10-point decrease in pain. The drops were even more profound when patients’ baseline pain and anxiety ratings were compared to their ratings after listening to some sick beats.

Interestingly, some years back when I was in an accident, they had a stereo in the room during surgery and asked what I would like to listen to during the procedure. I picked something calm.

Huh...when the kids in the shop (employees young enough to be my kids) play hip-hop or hard core rap, my anxiety level goes up.

I presume you'd see the best benefits would be seen when the patient is listening to their music preference. Maybe death metal is your thing, so it would relax you in that way that only music can.

That's actually an interesting point. Metal in general actually helps calm me down when I'm angry. If I'm sad it cheers me up. Sad music makes it worse. Classical is also very good at calming me down (not that I get angry, pretty long fuse actually).

Depends on mood more that anything.

Metal helps to wake up and feel more energetic. Good Blues definitely helps to calm down and focus

My endodontist used to offer a movie but by the time the nitrous really kicked in couldn't pay attention, altho just the distraction of the audio was nice. Don't think any other type of surgery was I offered any music...but new age/jazz/acoustical guitar would work for me.
