I imagine that if a lot of kids were asked about Jazz, their response would be "What's a Jazz?".

My friends' 15 year-old daughter walked into the room several times while he was listening to some of his favorite music. He plays keyboards and several other instruments, so his interests in music are widely varied, through many decades. She would listen for a while, then go back to whatever she had been doing. Most of what he was listening to was from the mid-'60s through the mid-'70s and some of it was popular, but it really wouldn't be called 'pop music'. Some of it was pretty obscure, but has maintained a loyal following. At one point, she asked if the music was representative of that time and he said it was. She turned around and said, "God, my generation sucks!". She sometimes has a hard time making friends because she just doesn't follow the trends and would rather debate & discuss things than gossip, decide for herself that something is good or bad and she occasionally says things that don't make the other person happy when she hears them spouting BS, including her teachers. His 17 year old son listens mostly to traditional Jazz- plays mostly keyboards & percussion, but also guitar and possibly bass. Playing came from both parents playing, but the interest in Jazz came on his own. He had a recital last night.
if there is one aspect about my musical tastes that has radically changed since I got the Salk Songtowers (shameless plug) its my appreciation for Jazz. Since they arrived, jazz has come alive in my little music emporium. I have easily purchased more jazz content than anything else over the last year or so. Its amazing what some excellent speakers will do for a genre. Its a wonderful thing.

I loves the rock n roll, but I'm definitely learning a new musical language with all those horns and keyboards

I have listened to/heard some incredibly loud music and at times, I didn't have ear plugs to protect my ears from damage, but I think any damage was only form two or three shows. I also play electrical guitar but not professionally, so I haven't had to stand next to many drummers. Since I work in AV, I need to be able to hear well and having been tested, I know that my hearing is better than average for someone younger than my age but the one thing I have noticed over the years is that when better speakers are used, the SPL doesn't need to be high- the detail in the music is more apparent at lower levels than from bad speakers, at any level.

One thing I hate is when the SPL is under the control of someone else and they refuse to turn it down.

Consumer electronics is a low margin, low profit category...
Gibson attempted to outrun the market by adding CE brands and expanding sales..:(
Very obvious with either the bankruptcies, sales or simply the withdrawal in the market by the brand the ROI is not there...
Another contributing factor is the internet, the wide global spread of low product pricing destroys the possibility of an independent AV specialist to survive.. The ones that do are carrying the very high-end esoteric brands selling quality over quantity...

Just my $0.02... ;)

My cousin, who is my business partner, "Hates" bass. Going back to High School days, he has had the most worthless and weak sounding systems I've ever heard. He had some low end Kenwood seperates back about 1971 or so, driving tiny little speakers. I don't remember what they were, but a decent sized portable radio sounded better. Years later, I ran into him when he was having a new car stereo installed with some tiny little gutless speakers. I don't get it at all. When I was living in my house, I had the room shaking most of the time. He came over once and I just had my speakers on, no sub, and he complained about the bass I had, and there wasn't much. He complains endlessly when going to movies.
Sounds like a fun dude...

My mom can be like that. She was visiting and we started to watch a movie in the theater. She wanted the lights on and sound turned down so she could mess with her laptop the whole time.

I pretty much said we weren't doing that and she didn't have to watch if she didn't want to. She insisted that she can do two things at once...

He tends to be a "Sky is Falling" guy. He called in a panic once about there being some asbestos in our building and it was the end of life as we knew it. We called a guy who someone knew and he checked it out and called me laughing, saying it would be about $750-800 bucks to entomb it forever in some kind of epoxy or something. The world, and life, was saved.
