AVR's Amp vs Amp added to pre-outs.

So, I have this Yamaha AVR with pre-amp outs. I never used the amp/amp's ,
alone since I got it a few months back. Good unit didn't pay a lot of coin for it. Doesn't have the latest greatest surround processing didn't need ATMOS, or DTS-X. I added a EMO XPA-5 1st gen. Let me just say in my opinion the EMO amp is worth every penny very dynamic sounding amp with big Kahuna's. Now I removed the XPA-5, well when you have been in this hobby as long as I have sometimes I just can't help myself from tinkering. Now the Yamaha is running my L/R mains in a 5.1 set. I believe the amp/amps are indeed a formidable match to the EMO multi channel amp. My mains are fairly easy to drive 8 Ohm speaker rating, I believe is right about 91-90 sensitivity. So even a 50 watt X 2 @ 8 Ohms would get them loud. Now since my mains are not even mid high end they do start to break up just above reference some with a lil EQ tweaking of the slope drop I have been able to tame that some. Now with the EMO amp its very dynamic @ +1, which I feared to go any higher than that with the volume L/R mains stood there handled the EMO quite well. Now with the Yamaha amp/amps . @ 15 to 12 dbs nice and clean just like the EMO amp, but going to 0 umm a Big No No. Distortion level with the M70 monitors was unbearable. Since I do not and can't listen that loud all the time because I'm old and I like my ears I want them to last past 65. I do believe the EMO will be resting quietly for some time .

room size, is approximately 14 x 17. I set about umm 10ft from my mains, and center. Rear surrounds are about 7ft and 6ft from center, sweet spot. I can not move the surrounds behind my sitting position without moving my sofa up, than that would put me even closer to HDTV, and mains 5 to 7ft..So yeah don't need the EMO amp really don't.

PS... Now ADTG, with a better pair of mains I am sure the Yamaha would perform better figuratively speaking and the EMO amp no doubt in my mind the EMO amp would drive a better pair of mains with authority. Yeah I know lots of acronyms, and cinnamons. I know specs, I know what to look for when choosing gear I just don't get on a blackboard with chalk so to speak like you guys do. So please don't post up any formulas, specs or graphs. Had enough of that with oscilloscopes and so forth back in my Tech days. I'm to the point I hate even looking at a PLC panel online much less the fact sheets. All I want at my age now is.. sweet music to my ears in lullabies. Maybe I should get me one of those Bose sound waves with the CD player? Snap out of it Michael!. Slaps face twice.. ..Thanks for checking out my Thread ADGT!. And that’s the salient thing right there.

Save up that $2K. Watch for some big sale on either new or used speakers. For example, last Christmas RBH had the old SX-T1 speakers at around 80% off clearance.

Maybe someone will sell their SX-T2 Towers for cheap. Or their Legacy Audio speakers for cheap. Other other brands. Have that $2K ready when the opportunity arises.

Keep that EMO amp on hand if you should need it.

That Yamaha AVR May be all you need as well.

In the mean time, just enjoy that sweet music.

80% off, wow, Polk had done that somewhat with there old LSi line a little more than 50% off. I picked up the whole line for around 2,500 bills. For as old as that line was should have deen discounted more 40% at least. If I remember right Polkaudio still had over quarter of a million in Old Stock sitting around, then again Matthew Polk had to get his buy out. PolkAudio had sold off the whole inventory to investors in Vegas I believe? Maybe one of the 'INFO Guru's like the memeber on here who worked with Harman International thats intuitive friendly with info. to enlighten me as to exactly. Ordered those from some dude over the phone at least it wasn't some white Van guy in a parking lot. I have known from the beginning of my journey with this Hobby, speaker's are the biggest factor of sound reproduction. Think back from the old day's with a old car, one speaker that was usually in the middle of the dashboard, 60's (mono) am radio if you where lucky to own the Cadillac you'd have nice speakers, not the Pink kind like Mr shaky legs Elvis Presley would buy and give to his friend's or friend don't believe he really had many accept fast hot women.. He still ended up a obese drug addict probably died a miserable life. . Anyways my whole point on this outrageous post as Me being an outrageously, handsome, and , it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out speaker's are the end result with sound reproduction.

As I've said numerous times, I've used the Denon X3100 AVR alone to power 4-ohm speakers to very high KARAOKE volume without the need of any external amps. Listening distance is about 18FT and the open-plan room is 22' x 23' x 13' ceiling.

I am not one bit surprised that you don't need to use the Emotiva amp in your system.

And unless you buy some 2-ohm speakers with a sensitivity of 80dB/w/m, I doubt you will ever need that Emotiva amp in your system.

Still, I cannot deny that the best speakers one can afford is where it's at. That is what I still marvel most at when I listen. Granted, I have about 7 pairs of speakers in rotation on a meager 2.2 system, but it's still the part that really brings it all home. Actually, that and the subs. So, again I am in the AVR camp with it's great bass management features above all, with or without external amplification.

Most of the time it's not about "need"; it's more about "desire".

For most of us, this AVR vs Amp debate is purely academic and for fun.

Unfortunately sometimes these debates turn into personal arguments.

All I know is, I am right, and people must be wrong if they disagree.

I would put a pair of SX-T1 speakers (each paired with a nice subwoofer) up against any speaker I've ever heard.

That sale was crazy!

The T1's were what caused me to eventually sell all my speakers.
