Authenticity of Speakers

Hi all,

This is my first post on the forum. I am in process of building a home theater. I found a guy on craigslist selling Klipsch R-28f speakers, $500 for a pair. How do I check the authenticity of the speakers. Have anybody come across fake Klipsch products? He says, he got those from Storage Locker auctions. Should I trust these speakers?

simplest way - just listen to them. Fake speakers won't sound good at all

Welcome!

I haven't heard of any Klipsch counterfeit speakers.

If you're shopping for used in that price range, see what else is available (you might find something better than those particular speakers) and run it by us.

Thank you @ski2xblack. I checked Klipsch website and this amazon link. These speakers, each cost around $449. He is offering $500 for a pair. He says he got those from Storage locker auctions. I think the Klipsch speakers in itself are good, I just was not sure if I should trust him.

So you think there are better speakers as compared to Klipsch in this range?

That was going to be my suggestion, contact Klipsch and see what the valid range of serial numbers are....altho a good fakeout artist I suppose would think of that. Hard to imagine someone going out of their way to sell counterfeit speakers on craigslist, tho....

ps The used vs new price isn't that unusual, speakers lose value as soon as you buy them in most cases....

Thank you @lovinthehd. I am going to go test them tomorrow, listen and see the condition and then make a decision.

Thank you guys for quick response.

I would think that weight and real panel labeling would be the best indicators of a fake.

So, I got Onkyo TX-NR575 receiver and was thinking of Klipsch Quintet V speaker set. I saw these and thought could add these as front speakers and Quintet as surround. I am still thinking of a matching sub. How well will Definitive Pro Sub 1000 go for my 12x15 living room. I am thinking of future house, where the room can be bigger. Thanks.

It wouldn't make a lot of sense to manufacture knock-off speakers. To get everything to look right wouldn't cost a lot less than just manufacturing your own loudspeaker, in fact, it might even cost more. There wouldn't be much margin in that. This is why 'white van special' speaker scams usually invent their own brands, they can just make a cheap cabinet that doesn't have to look like anything else, and use the cheapest possible drivers that don't look like anything else on the market.

Thank you @shadyJ
Yes, that is true. He says, these are brand new and I convinced him yesterday to bring the price down to $400 for a pair. I checked Klipsch site, and these are not yet discontinued by Klipsch, first built in 2014. Do you think $400 for a pair is still not a good deal?

I think $400 for a pair of R-28f speakers is a good deal if they are in good shape.

I would look elsewhere for subs, maybe Klipsch R-112/R-115 if you want to aesthetically match, but can't think of any sub from Def Tec I'd want. Check offerings from sub specialists like SVS, Hsu Research, Rythmik, Power Sound Audio. Maybe the RSL Speedwoofer 10S.

How about Klipsch R-12SW?

Hi all,

Just an update, I went to the guy's storage, listened to the speakers and made a a decision to buy them. This is my first home theater setup for a small/medium size room and wanted to start with basic/average system. Below is what I got,
Onkyo TX-NR575 receiver.
Klipsch R-12SW subwoofer.
Pair of KLipsch R-28F for front L & R.
5.0 set of Klipsch Quintet V for surround.

I did Dolby Atmos setup, 5.1.2 with 2 Quintet's mounted to the ceiling and it sounds quite awesome. I will try to upgrade if moved to a bigger house, but this setup is pretty satisfactory for me right now. Thank you guys for your responses.
