Hi I’m looking for a sub to go with my Salk Veracity HT2 speakers http://www.salksound.com/model.php?model=Veracity HT2 Salk Veracity center and Denon X3400h

Room size: 25 x 13 with 8’ ceilings (2,600 cubic ft).

70% movies/30% music from Apple TV

Seating distance is 8’ if I’m alone and 11’ with company

I am not looking for earth shattering bass.

Budget is flexible

Looking for something that's easy to set up and somewhat compact

I will be getting 2 surrounds at some point.

I know Salk uses Rythmik subs, so which Sub would you recommend? Open to Hsu, SVS and others too

thanks!

With speakers like that, if you are adding a sub, then you need top performing subs!

Your best bet would be to discuss your needs and wants directly with Salk or Rythmik. Either company provides excellent customer service and consultation.

I personally use a Rythmik F15HP and it is awesome.

I did speak to Jim. He said any of Rythmiks 12” subs would be fine for my space but they seem to have several 12 inch subs. I did email Rythmik some time back and didn’t get a reply but I plan to call them today

I'd say they're probably referring to the F12, not one of the other variants. Since you do a lot of film, I'd probably step up to a 15" or go with a vented 12" though.

I just added a single Rythmik F18 to my Ascend system. Might be a little on the larger side, but this is one sweet sub. It’s my first Rythmik and I’m hooked.

I think that the OP should also consider the offerings from Hsu Research. Something like the VTF 15 H MK2 would be a good contender. Duals would be even better. Here is a link for the OP:

On a side note, the OP might get lucky and find a B-stock buy. Have done so myself w/excellent results. Nothing like saving money on a great product! :):):)

Salk subs are dressed up Rythmik subs. 2600cuft should be covered ok by a single F12, but if you want your bass to be great in more than one "sweet spot" then by all means add a second f12 sub.
Another great option is HSU's ULS-15mk2. Pair of them would help you to get great bass and save some $.

I've consulted with a few friends who had rooms of about that shape and size (long, relatively narrow, and a low ceiling), and they always seem difficult to achieve good bass in, especially if you place your speakers along one of the short walls. When I've measured those rooms with a single sub, the measurements always look terrible, and usually the bass sounds as lumpy as the measurements look. The only way one sub works seems to be if your mains go deep enough (say, flat to 32Hz) that you can run them full-range and you essentially get three bass sources. Unfortunately, I don't think the Salks are anywhere near capable of that.

I also agree with j_garcia, I think 12" sealed subs are probably not capable enough for this space, even two of them, for any HT use. Two 12" ported subs might work, but ported subs are generally big and ugly. If you stick with sealed subs I'd recommend 15" versions.

If you are placing the mains along a short wall, I highly recommend that you try placing one sub on each long wall a couple of feet in front of the mains, if that's a possibility. I've heard (and measured) that layout work fairly well in three different rooms like yours, but I still think your room is going to be a challenge for bass unless you use three or more subs.

One real factor is how loud do you listen? If you only ever listen at modest volumes, a sealed 12" or two might be enough. If you like to crank it once in awhile, or if the music you like has heavy use of bass, that will not be nearly enough. You can't lose with any of the manufacturers mentioned here, Rythmik, Hsu, SVS, they all have very high-performing subs. I would also mention Outlaw Audio and Monoprice's Monolith THX subs, those are also excellent subwoofers. The question is Rock The House or no Rock The House? If Rock The House, multiple 15"s, preferably ported. If no Rock The House, a couple sealed 12"s will do the trick.

Hi guys, thanks for all the replies. I’ll try to reply to all, since I don’t know how to do nested replies on my iPad:

- I’ve been reading extensively here and on avs for several weeks. It seemed like between Rythmik, Hsu, Power Sound and SVS any choice would be a fine choice
- outlaw and Monolith also seemed great choices. The only reason I didn’t seriously consider them is because I was already confused with he above 4 choices
- getting one large sub would be difficult because of WAF, and getting 2 subs seems like overkilll, given that I’ve never had a sub, plus WAF already ‘made some noises about how much I was spending (new tv, LCR speakers and avr in the past few weeks!). I can alsways add another later if I want to. I also can’t play loudly because of small kids sleeping
- Rythmik had an edge because of the Salk connection but I wasn’t able to get in touch with them
- SVS seemed more corporate and I wanted to support a smaller company
- Kevin from Hsu suggested the VTF 3 MK5 which is 900.00
- Tom from Power Sound suggested the PSA 15V which is 950

Ultimately I decided to with Tom, because I like the way he presents himself on these forums, and it’s nice to talk to the owner. However I went with the 15S because it’s 20 pounds lighter and several inches smaller.

Judging by multiple threads here, i’ll Be getting another sub in a few months but this is a good start!
