When using Pro-Logic Surround Mode my sub is not receiving a signal. The sub is turned on in settings and works when I am using Movie Surround mode. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to use the sub woofer in Pro-Logic for the Marantz AV550?

Thank you for replying. I turned on LFE and set the center channel to small. The sub is now working. With the LFE turned on am I able to change the center channel back to large? I am out of town now and can’t test the system.

I haven't read your manual. In my avrs (at least I think it's the same in all of them) if I want to set center to large it insists the L/R speakers are also set to large. Speakers set to large will not get LFE channel when using a sub (.1 in content that has such), nor any bass redirection. If you want both center set to large and center channel bass sent to the sub then the LFE+Main selection (aka double bass) is an option.

I do not find an option for LFE + Main. My options are LFE 0 or -15 db

My front speakers my surroundsound speakers and my center channel are all full range speakers. I thought it was maximizing their potential. Is there a reason I wouldn’t want to do this?

What speakers are we talking about? What sub(s)? Can your speakers truly compete with your sub(s)?

The whole reason of having a sub(s) is to use it. If you only want it for only LFE in movies rather than supplementing your speakers in general just set them all to large (which it sounds like you did), but you were the one questioning the use of the sub when (assuming) you're expanding 2.0 into surround with PL so now I'm not sure what you want your setup to handle. If you set all your speakers to large the only time you'll have your sub in use is for programming with a recorded LFE channel (.1). Expand on what you want to happen when....

FWIW I have "full range" speakers and I still use subs for better handling of (and positioning for) bass. My subs are much better than my what-many-might-consider full range speakers at probably anything below 200hz plus they're better positioned for better response throughout the room. I don't cross them there, tho I do cross them at 100hz and sometimes more.

Thank you for the insight! I assumed that when a sub was present all sub frequencies were routed to the sub. I will change to small and see how it goes. I have been listening to music for years. This is my first experience using surround sound and my tv.

No worries. LFE and subwoofer are intertwined but terminology sometimes get jumbled together when are actually separate. In the end it's all about what sounds good to you so experiment. Personally I'd set all the speakers to small and try 80hz as crossover to start.

Having five full range speakers (are they all the same speaker too?) for movies isn't something very many have to experiment with. I suppose out of my 7.4 configuration four of the speakers might be considered full range by some but they don't dig to an f3 of 20hz so to me, they're not....plus they're kinda small compared to my subs.

I am looking forward to the education this will bring. I am running Klipsch Herrisies (spelling) in the front Bose 301 for surround and a B and W 10 inch for the sub. My system is very dated but I have been enjoying the klipsches for over 20 years. I have 5 Marantz mono block 125 amps that do very well in the area I have. Your thoughts are more than welcomed. thank you again!

Oh ya....the center channel is klipsch as well.
But which Heresy model do you have? We need specifics :) What is the center, another Heresy? I don't think the Bose 301 are in quite the same category in any case :) B&W may have some speakers that are okay, but their subs...meh. Your Heresys may benefit a little from that sub but I'd look for more depending on size of your room....

Definitely experiment, one thing these avrs have is a variety of ways to set things up. May want different things for different sources, some avrs are more helpful in remembering such for you....

Good luck!
