Yamaha RX-V781 Setup is Driving Me Crazy

I just purchased this receiver and one piece of the setup is driving me crazy. A little background on how it's set up: I have a Samsung 55" TV connected to the receiver via the ARC HDMI output on the receiver per the instructions. My DirecTV box is connected to the HDMI 2 input on the receiver. All speakers are connected via banana plugs to their respective inputs. None of the AV inputs are being used.

When the the TV is shutdown and restarted, the receiver powers up and displays HDMI 2 as the audio source and the TV sound is heard for a few seconds - then, the system automatically switches to AV2 as the audio source - and the sound goes dead since nothing is being input using any of the AV inputs (including AV2). I have checked, double checked and tripled checked the programming and manual and cannot figure out why this is happening.

When this occurs, I can always manually switch the audio source back to HDMI 2 and the sound comes on and stays on. It appears the audio selection is defaulted to AV2 no matter what I have selected.

Anyone else have experience with this? Thanks in advance for help!

Sounds like an HDMI CEC glitch, I take it that in order to use HDMI ARC you have enabled HDMI controls in both the avr and tv? Try disabling them.

ps You may need an optical cable for any tv sourced audio, tho.

I know they are enabled on the TV (this receiver replaced a Marantz 5006 running the same cable setup), but I'm not sure on the receiver. Seems like the default would be enabled and I have successfully run the DVD player using HDMI cabling without any glitches.

HDMI control is usually required to be enabled on both the tv and avr for the ARC function and doesn't always play nice among different brands' implementations; on my tv/avr combo it always wanted to switch the avr to the tv input and I wanted the cable/sat input as a starting point so I just disabled ARC (and no longer use any tv-sourced audio so don't even use the optical connection from tv to avr any more).

HDMI settings should be apparent in each units settings and to stop the inadvertant switching I'd turn them both off (but that's me for my purposes). Do you have a dvd player that runs on HDMI CEC protocol also? Or just a plain old hdmi cord from the player to the receiver, no auto turn on/off with the avr or similar extra function over hdmi?

Last night I pulled out the volumous, but thorough manual to see if anything addressed my problem. I recalled changing the setting for HDMI Control from OFF to ON. I learned that when selected ON, only the AV and AUDIO input selections can be use for TV audio. When I turned HDMI control OFF, the system then used HDMI 2 (as I wanted) for audio source as I wanted. BUT, when the receiver is turned ON, it no longer turns the TV on so I have some studying to do!

My avrs came with remotes that you can program to turn the tv on/off either with another button press or sometimes even as a macro, or you can look into the Harmony or other universal remotes.

Usually the avr manual has IR codes for a variety of tvs to work with their remotes, I'd start there....

If you have multiple activities and want a remote with nice back-lighting etc. I have a Logitech Harmony 550 for my home theater upstairs in the bonus room. Extremely easy to setup and worth the money. Some of the new Harmony series aren't really that great, so read the consumer reviews before you purchase one. You can setup multiple activities, while some have iPhone/iPad integration instead of actually using an IR remote (they use an IR blaster that's connected to your wifi). I just purchased a 700 Harmony last weekend for my downstairs TV/Bose setup above the mantel.....wanted something easy and reliable for the wife and kids to use....works great so far. The 700 has rechargeable batteries, plug in a USB from a wall port or iPhone charger and your good to go.

This would drive me crazy too it's like a complex puzzle and the dog ate a few pieces. Have you checked if there's a firmware upgrade?

When the TV is powered on, HDMI/ARC is sending a signal to the AVR to force the AVR to select AV2 (or other audio Input on the AVR via settings). My Marantz has an option called TV Audio Switching to turn this Off so no signal is sent.

@'bgtees', I have, Yamaha 7790 for some reason with Yamaha's units below their Advantage line which is their premium line has issues with the 'ARC'. read up on 'loveinthehd' post on this thread he is spot on with his comments concerning that issue. I had to disable 'ARC' and use the Optical out on my HDTV. For some reason only Yamaha's mid level units, not saying All of them under the Advantage line..aka, RX,and STR, units have that issue with ARC not being compatible with some manufacturer's audio/video gear. I have had Onkyo,Harman Kardon, NAD pre-pro processor and those units didn't have any issues with ARC. I also recommen disabling the ARC, and using just the 'Optical' out on your TV or PS or Sat box or Cable box just for your ARC. Now you will lose HDMI processing but only for the most recent Surround Sound Processing and THD and MasterHD. You will get DTS, Dolby Pro logic.

The 7790 is my first Yamaha since umm...2003 or4? My Son has Yamaha's 1050 he doesn't have the issues with 'ARC' using HDMI. Also in his OSD, Yamaha added some features where is you don't have to disable HDMI to switch between sources and input. On the units you and I have in order to keep 'Amp' output on you have to disable HDMI ARC, I found that out by going to my Son's home comparing OSD between the two units. It's a 'gimmick' with some manufacturers, that will say leave out a feature or two in order to get you to upgrade to the premium line of AVR units. But Yamaha's manual EQ settings are Superior over Onkyo's and some other unit.
