Honestly, this one stunned me a bit. Perhaps partly because I am accustomed to scientists living a relatively long time, not that Hawking was young. It's a shame either way, the world needs more great intellects, not less, and now more than ever.

I still can't get past what Hawking wrote in "A brief history of time"
If the Universe starts contracting the arrow of time will reverse, which means the direction of time reverses. We will remember tomorrow and not yesterday.

It seems pretty unlikely though, as it seems like the rate of expansion of the universe is acceleration due to dark matter.

None of these things I can even start to get my head around to understand o_O

That doesn't make sense to me. I will have to pick up a copy of that book to look at that closer, but I don't see why the arrow of time would reverse just because space contracts. As far as I know the arrow of time is determined by processes of entropy and the second law of thermodynamics, and that wouldn't change simply because space either expands or contracts.

Seriously, I have no life.

Considering the fact that he was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 22 and given three years to live, I think he did very well. I can't imagine living the way he did, but the fact that he didn't just give up is testimony to his mind.

Space and time are not separate concepts, we must refer to SpaceTime.

I have 2 copies of A Brief History of time. The normal copy, and the "Illustrated Brief History of Time". Get the illustrated version! The pics and diagrams really help to convey the concepts. I had already read the original version before I came across the illustrated version, but I had to buy the illustrated version when I found it.

I know space and time is not separate.... maybe Stephen Hawking was wrong here?

RIP Mr. Hawking. He was given TWO years tops to live and he lived more or less as long or longer than anyone diagnosed with ALS.
