Good morning all! I am in need of some advice and I think that this would be the best place for it. I am going to go ahead and get right into it:

I have been a hi-fi gear lover for many years. Recently, I have amassed what is currently my first ever 7.1 set up which is:

Yamaha RX-V2700 7.1 Receiver
Pair of JBL Studio S38 speakers with the copper colored cones and black cabinets
JBL EC35 Center Channel
JBL Northridge E20 surrounds (pair)
Optimus Pro 7Av surrounds (pair)
JBL HLS810 Speakers (kept in a closet on standby)
and finally a Klipsch RW-12 Subwoofer.

I also have a Yamaha KX 393 tape deck. I have an Onkyo DV CP702 DVD/CD changer that is about to get chucked out the window (long story) and I have a Yamaha YBA-11 Bluetooth adapter so I can play music through my Samsung S8. I would like to get an Audio Technica turntable for later as well. I also have a Samsung 32" smart TV that I got late last year. I am looking to upgrade to a TCL 55 inch TV with 4K HDR with Dolby Vision later as well.

Now, my dilemma is: I am not into Atmos or getting a second sub. I am more concerned about the way that I play my media. As you can see, I play a combination of music media (tapes, cds and Bluetooth) but, should I upgrade my receiver for a better Bluetooth "experience?" Should I replace the Onkyo changer for just a regular Onkyo DX-C390 6 disc cd changer? I do not watch that many DVDs and if I do, I watch them on my laptop. Blu-Ray? I do not own a Blu-Ray player or movies. Sorry, I am more of a music person and I myself rarely go to a movie theater. I do not plan on getting rid of the JBL S38s. It's more the receiver and the CD/DVD changer that I am concerned with.

Any recommendations that any of you can make as to in regards to my system? And yes, my Yamaha has HDMI inputs and outputs. Is getting a new cd changer worth it and what brands do you feel can match or outshine Onkyo?

Sorry for the long post. Just a newbie looking for some advice and help.

Have a great day!

Hi!

Disc changers seem to have all but vanished from the market, and I wonder if reliability had more to do with that than the slow sale of CDs.

Since you're getting a 4K TV, I would suggest an Oppo 203. I still use their older 93 model but will upgrade when I make that switch too(and no, I'm not selling it, just moving to another room :).

The Oppo's are arguably the best players for music/movies you can buy. It's not a cd changer, but they might offer better performance over what you've been hearing.

I would not bother with a CD changer if you plan on getting a 4K display and a 4K player. What I would do is get a Sony UBP-X800 4K player which does a really good job with 4K and audio to boot. Connect the left HDMI directly to your display to get your 4K picture and use the right HDMI connector to send audio into the AVR. I've done just that for main floor setup with this player and an RX-V1900. On the AVR side, set the input to straight and it will automatically select the number of channels being used depending the source; CD, DVD, BluRay, or 4K.

This unit has garnered high marks in many audio/video review sites.

First, I like your speakers. I just sold a pair of s-38 II’s to a forum friend. I loved them, and found their imaging to be superb.

Anyway, I would personally not use BT for any music. The medium isn’t quite good enough imo for a quality experience. However, if you can find something that can be tied into the network, that’s the way to go. I use apples airport express and AirPlay. I do not know what Samsung uses, or if it’s possible to use an airport express with one. But a network hub is much better than BT, and will allow you to stream from a pc as well.
