Receiver shuts down

my Sony 9.2 str-za5000es receiver shuts down when I turn volume up, I've got 7 paradigm studio series speakers. I am also running a powered sub. System sounds great, nice and clear but when I crank volume receiver shuts down. Should I be looking for new receiver or add a amp or something to my system?/ I've got my crossovers all set up properly I believe. I've played with all settings on receiver and no matter what I do it always shuts down on high volume, any suggestions?

The first thing to do is make sure you have no fault in the speaker wiring. I would redo them all and make sure that there is not the slightest whisker of a +ve touching a -ve. One strand is all it takes.

From the spec I see it only has sub preout so you can not use external amplification. In the spec Sony does not say what the minimum impedance load is.

If after a careful wiring check you still have the problem, and the unit is well ventilated, I would say the unit is most likely faulty and needs return. It could be however that your receiver does not like your speakers.

If you have to return the receiver, if possible I would get a receiver with pre outs so you can use an external amp if you want.

I have to say the specs on the Sony site are very sketchy to say the least.

agree with TLS, probably not capable of the sustained load thus the shutdown.

I had a similar issue and it turned out to be some bare wire behind my couch where one of our (at the time) puppies got at it. Inspect every inch of your speaker connections for bare wires and make sure you don't have any stray strands at the terminals.

I looked up those speakers and they claim "compatible" with 8 ohm, but doesn't actually state that they're 8 ohm speakers. Or am I over thinking it?

No, you are not over thinking it. 8 ohm compatible could mean anything from 2 ohm to 8.
Looking at the Studio 100 V5 I can bet it is below 4 ohms probably around 3. I would bet the 60 V5 is 4 ohm and not 8 ohm. Only the bookshelf 10 v5 could conceivably be 8 ohm but probably isn't.

I have just checked the 60 V5 and 10 V5 are 4 ohm by published measurements. Can't find the 100 V5 but it has to be lower than 4 ohms.

The receiver only gives an 8 ohm spec. If the wiring is OK then the Op needs a different receiver or speakers.

I have heard the 100 V5 and it is an absolutely awful speaker, with boomy bass and very harsh top end. The top end is so bad that the brass sounds nothing close to reality. The 60 V5 measures badly also.

Is this shut down with movies or music with all channel stereo mode?

Which specific speakers? And as asked how loud is loud?
