To Fix or Not to Fix

This is my first post on the forum. My audio hobby has been on the back burner for the last 16 years - raising twins pulled all my attention away. About four years ago I finished our basement and put in a home theater as part of the project. I purchased projector and screen, but kept all my old audio gear. This is a long way of getting to my question. I have a Parasound HCA-2003 that has a channel on the fritz. Back in '97 when I purchased this it was over 1k. I think, based on input from a repairman, that it could be a bad relay. With amps like Monolith-7 channel around for $1,600, I wonder if it is even worth fixing this amp after 21 years. To get it fixed, I'd be without the amp for 8-10 weeks and I'm guessing around $300. Any thoughts on whether or not it is worth it based on amp quality then and now would be appreciated.

Welcome! Parasound makes a good product so if it can be repaired cheaply then that is a good choice. The downtime is quite long though.

As long as the rest of the amp is in good condition and isn't in danger of failure then repair may be the most cost effective route. IF there is any chance the other parts of the amp can fail I wouldn't waste the money. The monolith amps are great a few members have them and love them. Especially since they are built by ATI who is a very well regarded amp manufacturer.

Where are you located? Do you have options as far as who might do the repairs?

What are you using for pre-pro?

I say get the new amp.

Then if you can find a local shop, let them try to repair it if it's under $200.

I'm in CT. There are two authorized repair places in the state so fortunately i won't have to ship the amp if I decide to fix it.
I'm using a Marantz AV8003 and an Anthem A2 for the L/R channels. If Monolith amps ever come back in stock, I may pull the trigger on one of those.
