Rookie knowledge on my first surround sound setup

Ok so I'm new to the game on this subject but willing to learn. I started a few years ago but never got back into it and wish that I didn't purchase what I did. I bought klipsch quintet iii for $200 new at the time. Not that they are bad but for the money looking back now I could of gotten better sats. However I am going to use them until my son gets a bit older. The reasoning is I can hang them on the wall and not worry about him destroying them because he is at the age of destruction right now lol. So right now I'm in the market for a receiver. I want a 7.2 ch because I know in a few years I will be upgrading. Seems to me a lot of audiophytes love the yamahas and marantz. Just by reading forums not just this site. My budget is around $400. Most likely will purchase from accessories4less. They have some great options for around that price but I'm torn on what to choose. For right now I will be using the sats and a sub. Which is my next question. The Polk psw505 is down to $194 and almost makes my decision easier but I wanted to see what other guys think. Will that sub match up well with my sats? I really wanted to go with SVS for my sub but the price just isn't there for me right now. Any thoughts or recommendations would be awesome thank!!

You can't go wrong with Yamaha or Marantz. I wouldn't worry about a 7.2 receiver exactly, just go for a 7.1 and use a Y-splitter to split apart the subwoofer output signal. True 7.2 receivers are a lot more expensive than $400. If your son is at the age of destruction, you might look for a down-firing subwoofer like this guy. The fragile cone is not exposed, and that will do more to save it from curious fingers than any grille.

Awesome thanks for the reply!! Is it worth investing the money towards a receiver with d amps in them? I originally was looking into the pioneer elite Sc models but after some research some people are having trouble with the latest format uploads. I liked the dual zone option as well so I can run my def techs on the porch as well. Is there anything in your opinion that stands out between a Yamaha or Marantz that you would consider a deal breaker? I do know that Yamaha offers a tiny better warranty option and is built in there own warehouse as opposed to outsourced.
I'm going to research that sub you mentioned. Thank you for your time.

One other quick question? Is it worth getting banana plugs? Do they improve any sound quality or do they just eliminate the hasstle of wiring? Any recommendations on speaker wire itself?

There are some avrs that have two separately adjustable (for level and delay) subwoofer pre-outs, but as shadyj mentions those are generally at the upper ranges of an avr brand's offerings. Audyssey XT32/SubEQ equipped avrs (generally Marantz & Denon) have the two adjustable subwoofer outputs, and I believe Yamaha and Pioneer have a few models as well. Many avrs indicating ".2" sub pre-outs merely have an internal splitter, or you can add an external splitter to a ".1" like shady says.

The matching up between speakers and sub is largely in the care you take and the settings in the avr to help out. Too bad you can't swing the SVS instead of the Polk but $200 is on the low side for a sub. What volume room does your sub need to fill?

Banana plugs do not improve audio, poorly installed ones could even detract. They're about convenience, on the backs of many avrs they're easier to use rather than inserting bare wire ends and tightening down posts, and are especially handy if you're moving things about frequently or changing gear frequently. A good solid bare wire end connection is just fine, tho.

I'd do some reading at this site about speaker wire and use the included table to select gauge/length. http://roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm or an Audioholics article on speaker wire here http://www.audioholics.com/audio-video-cables/speaker-cable-gauge

Hey thanks loveinhd for the reply. My room is 16x20 and like shadyj showed me I may go with the BIC v1220. I really couldn't find any bad reviews on it. Amazon currently has them for $170 but I'm not pulling the trigger on it yet. I did go with Yamaha for the receiver. I bought the Rxv681. It basically has everything I will need and more for at least the next 5 years or so. I found your links on speaker wire very informing and it did shed some light for me on that subject. I'm most likely going for 12 awg wire maybe by mono price. It's just satellites speakers so not much to go crazy over. However I may spend a little more for the sub wires. Any thoughts on that? I don't think most subs come with a wire kit. Thanks

Why did you get the new avr now, i.e. what does it provide that you need now? Personally would have upgraded speakers first. Do you not have a sub now?

lol I have nothing now but the speakers on my tcl tv. I bought klipsch quintets iii years ago but never got around to setting them up because I bought a new house and had a child. I'm now getting to them 3 years later.

I most likely will upgrade to bookshelves in future. Just don't have the money for a high end system right now.

Ok, that helps a lot in understanding where you stand now :)

The BIC sub seems to have high enough of a frequency range that could mate up with those sats you have, so could work well enough. The avr should be fine. Enjoy the audio that tv speakers just can't deliver.... :)
