@PENG Yes there is 2.0 DD, just not 2.1. If you were expanding 5.1 DD to 7.1 then PLIIx makes sense. Your tv just may do 5.1, tho.

Seems to me that ARC has never been thought out properly. I think most of us would expect that ARC should carry back jn audio, exactly what is being fed to it at the input. This is pure and utter BS. Im holding out hope that companies such as Sony who provided a second HDMI out which is purely audio will become more prevalent and adopted by other companies. I'm not holding my breath on this but it would be nice if they did.

The manuals said not, but since HD mentioned his could, I did some research and found that there were claims that my Sony model could do 5.1 (again, manual said 2 channel only, otherwise you have to go with prologic) so if I can find time I will try it.

Not really a big deal as optical works fine, just disappointment more than anything.

Hey peng, the way I read the clip from the manual and IME, I believe chris is right. Your arc only supports 2ch DD.

And thus my biggest complaint about ARC and CEC. Awesome in theory. Hampered by a total lack of proper execution. Every manufacturer seems to want to do it their own way, hence the problems we see. Thankfully we can all still rely on good 'ol fashioned optical cables.

That's what I thought and assumed all along. It is only after HD said his could do it then I re-read the manual and search the web to see if there are collaborating or contradicting information. Then I found at least one article that claimed the Sony could do 5.1 via its ARC, contradicting what the manual said. I never did try it out as its a lot of work, but will do so and report back eventually.

I was also quite disappointed on getting my first ARC capable tv/avr....until I dug into it hadn't understood about how limited the audio was (and did fool myself at first with the sound mode giving me multich audio rather than the source), it sure isn't advertised as being so limited, the implication that the audio would be what hdmi was capable of was just left hanging out there for the most part. Possibly more annoying was the different HDMI-CEC implementation among brands (judging by how many complain about it).

HDMI cables arrived yesterday and I even went out and bought plastic tie wraps. I looked behind it and I thought ..nahhhh. maybe I will rewire tomorrow.

I had some time yesterday so I rewired the PVR video straight to the display to get me my 4K video content and used the TOSLink from the PVR to the AVR to get my multichannel sound. I left the BluRay player connections alone.

When HDMI 2.1 officially comes out,(late 2018) you'll be able to use ARC lossless but you will have to buy a new TV and avr
