Ok I have a older Denon reciever with a HDMI monitor out. So i hooked up my cable box and blue ray thw the cable from my monitor out to what on the TV? Wont work with the ARC. SO i plug it in one of the other tv HDMI ins and only one works the cable for example because this is not a monitor in on the TV. Is there a way to run both thru my reciever and to the TV. I know I can use coax and fiber optic, but can i stick with HDMI for both? Hope thats not to confusing.

Welcome. Always best to be specific with make/model of each piece of gear for best help...

You have your cable box and bluray player connected to the avr via hdmi, right? Then using the hdmi monitor out to any hdmi connection on your tv should work fine, even the ARC connection. Your avr may not have the HDMI version to support ARC (to get audio from tv sources back to avr), though; you need HDMI version 1.4 supported by the avr for ARC in addition to your ARC enabled tv. Sometimes you need to enable certain hdmi functions in your avr and tv, too.

Some do run sources directly to the tv and use an audio only connection (like an optical cable) to their avr, but personally I prefer running everything thru the avr and by hdmi if available.

Need more details...

Pretty sure i hooked it to the ARC from monitor and got nothing a few days ago just assumed they were not compatible. Need to try this all again i guess.

Your avr has HDMI 1.3a processing so I wouldn't expect ARC to function. Or anything 4k for that matter.

Sounds like the setup works.

If you don't get anything from the bluray player but are fine with your set top box, it could simply be an HDMI handshake issue, maybe something in settings. What sequence are you turning gear on? Might try a different power on sequence. Might also make sure your bluray player's output setup and the avr's input setup are properly configured to work together.

Ok. I am deeply confused, maybe since it's quite yearly and I have not slept enough.
You have new 4k? Tv, Denon avr , bd player and a cable box.
Except TV I don't see any 4k components here so except streaming apps on TV, no arc is needed at all. Just run your cable box and BD player to HDMI inputs on AVR and connect TV with HDMI to monitor out on Denon.

Am I missing something else here?

If you have a 4K Blu Ray player then hopefully it has two HDMI outputs. One should be labelled 'Audio' and one labeled 'Video'. These BR players are made this way because older AVR's cannot pass 4K video through them. For them you would use one HDMI cable from the 'Video' out to one of the HDMI inputs on the TV, and the 'Audio' out to your AVR. This way when you want to use the BR player you would switch the HDMI input on the TV to the HDMI port the BR player is hooked to and the AVR to 'Blu Ray'. This way the audio will play through the receiver and the picture will go directly from the BR player to the TV.

shouldn't matter, but I'd use hdmi 1 if possible (sometimes additional ports don't have advanced features enabled, like ARC - depends on TV model - do read it's manual)

Always start with port 1. On my Pre/pro only the first 3 ports support HDMI 2.0.

If you are using HDMI 2 on your TV and you get an image from your cable box, then you should be good to go for connectivity to the TV from your Blu-ray Disc (BD) player.

If you are using a UHD BD player, then you likely will need to bypass the A/V receiver to get video to the TV on a different input of the TV. Assuming it is NOT a UHD BD player, but a standard BD player.

If the receiver shows cable just fine when the TV is on HDMI 2, and your receiver is on cable, then switch your receiver to the DVD input. If the image goes away and you get no image from the BD player, then swap the cable on the back of the receiver with the cable box. Yes, swap your BD and cable connections.

Your cable box is now on the DVD input. You know the cable box works, so you should see an image. Now switch your Denon back to the cable input. Do you see an image from the BD player? If so, then your Denon needs to have the proper HDMI input assigned to the back connections.

This is all in the setup manual for the Denon. Basically, it allows you to assign the various HDMI connections on the back to whatever you would like them to be. This can be confusing if they aren't set to match the labels that are already on the receiver, but it is important to ensure everything lines up properly.

Ok thanks alot i'll try that and go back to the Denon manual too. will keep you posted.
