Using TV as Main VS Using Receiver as the Main

Hello All,

Please be patient with me, as I'm an Old School Guy trying to bring my 90's audio/video equipment a little up to date.
Basic list of recent purchases or currently have on hand....
Marantz SR6009 AV Receiver (New)
LG 60 4k Ultra HD (New)
2- Sets of JBL 4312a Mains
Focal Chorus 7000 Center (New)
Polk PSW 650 Sub
Early 1990 Sansui Audio Equipment, Receiver, B3000 2x75 Watt Amp, CD, Phono, (Of which I'll probably only be using CD Player & maybe the Phono down the road)

My current Goal is to configure a 5.1 in main living area with a 2 channel Zone 2 in my workshop.

I've just got started going through the manual of my recently purchased Marantz SR 6009 AV Receiver and I have been unable to find what I'm looking for, so I had hopes you guys could point me in the right direction.
I want to be able to use the TV without having to always power the AV receiver on. So basically I'm thinking, I'd be using the TV as the main, running the Sat's signal to TV first. Is that common practice.....As I'm unable to find the wiring diagram in my manual for that configuration? Everything I'm finding runs the Sat's signal through the AV Receiver first. Is that configuration even possible with my AVR and or is there any con's for trying to hook it up that way?

Help Much Appreciated....

Scott

Can’t help without knowing what you’re getting your TV programming from. Your list includes no video or TV sources.

The main source will be Direct TV Satellite
We often use AT&T DSL internet for Netflix, Amazon Prime, Etc by way of TV itself

HDMI from direct tv satellite box to marantz, hdmi from marantz to tv. Make sure hdmi passthrough is turned on, on the marantz. You should be able to watch tv with the marantz off, make sure you setup the marantz so it knows what signal (input) to passthrough.

That's a good question....

All I can find is, Advance Receiver Service, HR44/700
It is directed wired to our internet, is HD & has DVR function, Other than that I'm not sure what you are needing to know.

The Marantz would have to be on standby, not completely off, to be able to have the satellite signal passing through to the TV.

Assuming he does not unplug the marantz, or its not on a switched circuit, it will be in standby when turned "off" if passthrough is turned on, the led should be a color other than red when "off"

I am using the passthrough setting and the LED is red-orange when I turn the Marantz SR5010 off for standby mode.

You prefer the tv speakers to running them through your avr? I can't stand my tv's speakers....

Seems you're on course with the other guys so far tho.

I run everything through the TV because it it easier for my wife to use it. I NEVER listen to the TV speakers. With the SONY Blu-ray player, I have HDMI going to the TV but also have coax digital going to the Yamaha AVR. The SONY TV has an optical digital out that also goes to the AVR. It all sounds and looks great. Peace and goodwill.

I'm still trying to figure out how to get the LG's 60 UH770 audio source to my Marantz 6009 AV Receiver. I'm using the TV for streaming of Netflix, Amazon, etc, as well have my Sat's signal directly to TV...so I need to get a sound source from TV to AV receiver.

I know many run video signal from the AVR to the TV but I don't want to have the AVR turn on all the time and /or I'm still needing to get signal for what I stream from the TV to my AVR for the times I want to fire up the receiver for a movie, stream music etc. Plus the wife is not wanting to hassle with turning on extra equipment just to watch the evening news, soap operas, etc.

I notice on the back of the LG I have three HDMI Inputs.....HDMI 1, HDMI 2 (ARC) & HDM 3

Will the HDMI 2 (ARC) give me a audio out even though it's labeled IN?

No, it's an Input only. Does your TV have an optical output? I figure that your SR6009 has a TV optical input.
