Hi there audio pros, I need your help.

I have to admit that I have, until now, never enjoyed the pleasure of good audio. Yes, we are talking Logitech 2.1 computer speaker bad. That just changed royally when I was at a party recently and the host (a little more affluent than I) had a Mac Pro hooked up to an Elac EA Amp and Elac B6 Debut speakers. I found myself sitting in front of them (also because it was just a really good looking setup) for most of the party just enjoying the music...what happened?...first of all, all the sudden I long to listen to way more music than before and secondly, I actually developed a need for good (or at least better-than-what-I-have) quality audio. Which of course means that I can no longer listen to my computer speakers without getting nauseous. But here is the problem, I cannot spend $1.100 bucks on that Elac setup.

Here is what I do have lying around in the basement...an Energy 8.2 sub and a couple of Energy Take satellites.

My plan: get a $90 dollar SMSL SA50 Plus stereo amp with DAC - connect it straight to my pc with USB audio - run the speaker wires from the amp to the sub's high level speaker inputs and connect two of the Energy satellites to the sub's speaker out as L-R stereo speakers. Of course, I know that much to realize that the Energy Take is a home theater speaker and not a musical performer. But as said, I am trying to get by with what I have and only spend a few bucks on the amp.

My question to you know is about the expected result. Is my plan going to give me better audio than my (now much hated) Z623 THX-my-a... or am I just going to trade one evil for another. And question number 2: will the SA50 Plus strong enough to go through the sub and then to the speakers.

I know the majority of replies will be suggestions to save up some money and buy something decent. Although I know this is always an option (with no open end as to how much I should save), my hope is that I will get by with this setup.

Thanks for your opinions!!

Regards, Christian

Can you afford to pick up a pair of bookshelf speakers for $225 from Amazon? KEF Q100.

Those will take you back to your friends' Elac system in many ways.

Hi Christian,

Welcome to the AH forum.

Have you considered powered speakers? I recently purchased a pair of Mackie CR4s, and I'm pleased with the performance.

There are several other powered speaker options available from Audio Engine, PSB, and Klipsch. Most are well liked and have good reviews.

I chose Crutchfield because of their fantastic reputation and excellent customer service.

Another option, getting an AVR and connecting to your pc by HDMI, then hooking most any speaker you would like.
