DVD or Player Problem?

Hi all! I've got a sudden problem and would advice before I buy a replacement unit. I've got a DVD movie which all of a sudden will freeze in the same spot. The player (a Yamaha blu-ray player model BD-S477, now discontinued) would not even respond until I pull the power cord from the socket! I'd plug it back in, get everything set, play the same DVD and would still freeze in same spot. I used a disc buffing / repair / cleaning machine on the disc, no help. I do suspect the disc could have a deep defect which I can't see. But why the player just freeze up?

The fact that it freezes in the same spot is a strong indicator that the problem is with the DVD, not the player.

Thanks for the response! Yeah, I think it could be, it's from Universal studios (program content) / Image entertainment (DVD packaging) and they seem to be notorious for poor quality media. Do today's current crop of expensive players have better error correction?

Two suggestions. Software update on the player and try that disc on another player, a friend's house or a store like Best Buy or another store that uses a player hooked up to TV. Make a note where it happens.
May also want to google that dvd if others have such issues as well.

Do you get the same results with other DVDs or just this one in particular?
