Has technology changed that much in 10 years or would I be safe and wise purchasing a pair of used ERA Design 4's vs something new? Thank you!

Speaker technology in some ways have improved but probably not so much for the ones you mention....but there are simply better speakers than the small ERA Design 4s....hopefully you're at least getting the sub with them.

No sub, they're asking $300 for the pair. I really wanted the center channel. Too much money in your opinion?

If you are not using a sub or even planning to wait a while, The AA's are the speaker to get. I don't know of any speaker that can match it for bass in the same price range, including tower speakers!
However, it is also the best speaker I have heard for its price range.

Era D4 needs some bass help, from HT Labs -- The –3 dB point is at 90 Hz, and the –6 dB point is at 72 Hz.
