Hey guys! Need your help deciding which receiver to get. I just purchased four Martin Logan Motion 35XT, Motion 8i center channel and a SVS SB2000 sub. Magnolia recommended the pioneer SC-LX502, but when I got home it wouldn't fit in my media center. They then recommended the Integra DRX-3.1. Long story short, I can actually use either receiver in my media center. Magnolia still recommends the Integra, what do you guys think?

Not a fan of Onkyo/Pioneer these days (same company now, Integra is the fancier brand put out by Onkyo) so I'd keep looking, Denon/Marantz, maybe Yamaha. Make sure you have some room for ventilation, modern avrs don't do well with heat accumulation in tight spaces....add fans if you need to.

ps Welcome to the forums.

I'm an Integra fan. as stated earlier watch placement, units get hot and how many people actually read the manual? Integra calls for 8" clearance on sides and top on a lot of units. Most people don't have a cabinet big enough with adequate ventilation and blame the company when the unit breaks.
Check the manual before you make a purchase and make sure it will fit in your cabinet or shelf with enogh space.

A qualifier on my Pioneer/Onkyo not being on my list. Partly because my last Pioneer lasted 2 whole years before crapping out with hdmi issues. Partly due the issues the older Onkyos had, which I've experienced, partly the loss of Audyssey. The Integras afterlife mentions are older refurb units (vs the ones that BB is recommending to the OP), like the Integras that Pewternhrata and Ziegl01 here have; these units have Audyssey, not sure if that's part of their liking of the units or not (or if such a program is important to the OP).

I tend to agree. While I have seen great results sound wise with Integras (also a nice bonus when they have the excellent Audyssey system), I have experienced too many faulty units to recommend them (or Pioneer) very highly. Out in the field, my experience has proven to me that Yamahas are the most reliable by a mile. Pioneer/Onkyo/Integra has been the worst, although the latest models seem to have improved some. Sony/Denon/Marantz fall somewhere in the middle. They all have their pros/cons for sure. The common theme with ALL of them though, is that budget AVRs seem to have the most problems and sound the worst to begin with. As Gene and Hugo have often pointed out, when they're trying to shove every logo on the packaging as possible, they gotta make compromises in other ways, usually by way of power supplies, inputs/outputs, and other internal circuitry. The high end stuff seems to be great from all of them (even from Integra), and I've rarely required replacement.

This actually gets me thinking about WHY I see so much failure with the budget AVRs. Aside from simply cheaper components. I wonder if customers have had to push them so hard to listen to them at reference levels that it's just really tough on the units. Whereas a powerful receiver barely has to break a sweat to listen at the same levels. Kind of like using an underpowered car versus a high powered car to get up to and maintain highway speeds. I do believe the 3.1 OP is looking at falls somewhere in the middle. Should honestly be a fine receiver, but I'd recommend checking out all options within that price point.

Just that, budget avr. Probably pushed more than they should. Thrown in a small cabinet. Mass produced for profit, not always cheap components but more of a generic design. I'd go back to rotel if I could afford it these days but for me Integra has always held up. Marantz and Denon not soo much. Yamaha I've never really dealt with, onkyo is a shot in the dark even given my Integra praise. Pioneer seemed to have fallen off the map for me, mid 90s early 00s elites I really really liked.

Not to contradict myself, but this kind of leads me to the thought that I need to be careful about thinking "Brand X = Bad and Brand Y = Good," as I've honestly seen good and bad from all. I definitely have my own biases and preferences, so I have to watch myself sometimes.

I think my takeaway from it all is to just steer clear of budget AVRs. Haha.

Thanks for the help guys! I hope I don't regret my choice, but I think i'm going to stick with the Pioneer. Only because I have it, and because i'm getting anxious to setup my new system and don't want to wait for them (Magnolia) to special order a different receiver.

I currently have a Onkyo TX-SR608, and have had zero problems. Hopefully my luck will continue.

Also, I have cabinet fans coming today :

I've used those same exact fans and have loved them. They've proven to be totally reliable for me and you can configure them however works best for you. I'd typically to a push/pull system, where the fans would draw in cool air from the lower part of the cabinet, and exhaust the hot air out the top. I'd often see a 20+ degree difference! Helped my customers' Integras for sure. ;)

Gents,

Just my take but like most here I'd avoid the Onkyo /Pioneer / Integra group. I'd go with Denon /Marantz or Sony.

In the olden days (like 40 years ago!) I used to Fan cool a Marantz 2325 when I used it to drive it at high volumes continuously for 4-5 hours. (I used to DJ a bit in my spare time.) It worked great.

But in a home setting these days, I'd expect all receivers to play at nameplate specifications continuously without overheating => or take the junk back!

I have had two integras the 80.5 Pre/Pro and a 30.4 Receiver, I have had 0 problems with either. That being said, dollar for dollar I would go with Marantz.

Ok, new problem, I failed to account for the HDMI's and power cord on the back of the receiver. So now both receiver's won't fit in my media cabinet. I found a receiver that will fit, but I'm concerned it won't be as good as the Pioneer or Integra, because its cheaper in price. What do you guys think?
