Insignia Reciever and Klipsch R14M question!

Hello,

My wife has recently purchased me a turn table, an Insignia Reciever and Klipsch R14M bookshelf speakers for Christmas as I’ve always wanted to get into Vinyl.

I set it all up today and was rather disappointed at the volume of the sound when I turned up the Reciever. At max volume the speakers are quite quiet.

I’m sorry I know almost nothing about home audio and am just learning. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Is the turntable plugged into a phono pre input or external preamp?

Sadly your wife's good intentions were cut short by poor customer service, this receiver does not have a phono preamp.

The tiny voltage created by the tone arm needs to be equalized and amplified, which is different from a CD player, for example. What you need is a receiver with a Phono preamp.

I'd say enjoy it for now, and maybe repurpose the receiver in another room someday. Audioholism is a very real and wallet threatening condition which afflicts many of us.

Spend some time reading the articles on this site and consider future wants/needs. I wouldn't buy anything else until you do that, but unfortunately a different receiver will be needed to solve your problem.

Which turntable and cartridge did you get? A phono preamp can be bought for as little as $13, but I haven't used one of those so I don't know if it's good enough. ProJect has one for $79 and their products are very good. If you google 'Phono Preamp', you'll find a lot of info.

To perhaps clarify a bit since you’re a newbie: If you get the phono pre-amp you will still be able to use the Insignia receiver your wife got you. Your turntable would plug into the pre-amp, then the pre-amp would plug into the receiver. Everything will work as it should then.

It’s a Audio Technica LP60 which has a preamp built in. And this:
Insignia NS-STR514-C 2 Channel Bluetooth Stereo Receiver.

Figured it out, on the back of the turn table there is a "phono" switch and a line switch. The "line" option has a high watt output and now the speakers are pumping out some good sound!

Yup, so you had the phono preamp switched off, thus you were feeding it the low-level, unequalized signal straight from the phono cartridge
