Yamaha RX-A770 vs RX-A1060

Hello all!

I've been trolling since my Denon started crackling all my speakers and figure it's time for a new receiver. My first quality receiver was a Yamaha bought back in 1998 that I gave away to a friend when I got a hand me down Pioneer Elite. That does but my friend still uses the Yamaha to this day.

When the Pioneer Elite died, I bought a less expensive Yamaha (should have spent a few more dollars). It did not have DD+ which I need due to my use of Tony. I got a nice Denon for cheap which is the one that is dieing now.

I've got an opportunity to upgrade now and was wondering what the community thinks.

An RX-A770 for $549 or a RX-A1060 for $899. Is it worth the extra $350 for the 1060? I will only be powering one home theater but also want to power the kitchen speakers and sometimes an outdoor space (although very rarely).

Appreciate your thoughts!

my vote would go to the RX-A1060 for the increased wattage alone

Definitely the RX-A1060, or better still, if you don't mind Denon, go for the AVR-X4300H (comparable to the RX-A2060) if you can still find one for $799.99 (was at price a couple weeks ago) brand new. Or you may consider the AVR-X3300W that is very comparable to the RX-A1060, at $599.99 brand new.

I'm definately entrenched in the Yamaha camp and I would spring for the 1060.

Do you know how efficient your speakers are?
Will you be running the HT and the speakers in the kitchen at the same time? Is HT 5.1?
A recent review of the RX-A860 showed it had a poorly designed amp section (compared to less expensive Yamaha AVR's of a few years earlier). I'm betting the RX-A770 is as bad or worse!

While the RX-A860 is fine driving small bass-managed 8 ohm speakers, this is the first time I'd actually caution people against using 4 ohm speakers or even running 8 ohm tower speakers on the “large” setting. I’ve never said this about a Yamaha before. It's sad that a $400 predecessor from the very same company offered a more robust amp and power section than this product, which has AVENTAGE moniker stamped on it.
It is worth evaluating your speakers' demands on the AVR before making a decision!

Also, what Denon did you have? Generally, things work out pretty well, but there are a few speakers that will destroy any AVR if you do not use external amplification!
