Emotiva BasX S8 + Marantz PM6005 = ?

Hello world!

I have a Marantz PM6005, a pair of KEF Q300 and (almost) an Emotiva BasX S8 sub. The amp doesn`t have any pre/line/sub/LFE outputs, so I`m stuck.
How can I connect the subwoofer, without blowing everything sky high? Can I use the headphone out as a "pre-out"?
I would much prefer to use the speaker out`s, but without any signal reduction, it will really hurt.

Found some adapters/converters, but only this one looks promising
https://www.crutchfield.com/S-L7NADHU4DQE/p_543ADP12/Russound-ADP-1-2-Speaker-level-to-Line-level-Adapter.html

Will this do the job or I need something else?

Any help with this issue is much appreciated!

Thank you!

If you can up your budget some on your sub selection, then I would opt for the SVS SB12-NSD instead. It does have speaker level/high level inputs, as well as, a fixed 80 Hz @ 12 db per/octave HPF filter set of speaker level outputs. That would give you excellent bass management. That is how I would do it. Nothing against the BasX S8, but the SB12-NSD amp has more features that would be very helpful to you. Just saying.........

While I may disagree with Phil that the sub with the fixed high pass is "excellent" bass management, that's a good way to go with an amp not suited for use with a sub....it at least beats just a sub with only a low pass filter (let alone a sub without high level inputs).

Why did you want the Emotiva sub, tho?

Doesn't your Marantz have a line out for recording devices?

Thanks you all for answering

Phil - I saw many good reviews for SVS subwoofers, no only for SB12-NSD, but in my home country (Romania) their price is quite prohibitive. Imagine that the cheapest SVS sub (SB-1000) is 640 USD. For the Marantz PM6005 and the pair of KEF Q300 I paid almost the same amount. Having speaker in`s would have made things a lot easier, but I could not find a sub in this price range (200-300 usd) that looked as good and had the specs of the Emotiva.

lovinthehd - I bought the Emotiva at a similar price to the one in the US (Black Friday). In Romania you would rarely get this kind of a deal. Also, I really like the design, although it`s very simple. it has a bottom facing speaker and I don`t have to worry hitting it or that my cat is sharpening her claws where it should not. The price was very decent, at around 225 USD (on Amazon is 199). My room is pretty small (around 9 square meters) and I`m sure that the Emotiva will be more than enough.

Well, a sub that doesn't connect well to your gear is only so much a bargain....

You`re so right, but I plan to go 5.1/7.1 in the near future, and this will no be an issue anymore. What I need now is something to make it work till that moment comes. Thanks!

May have to wait for that avr....as to the headphone thing I don't think is a great idea but I did glance at your manual; while many units cut off the speakers when something is plugged into the headphone jack, yours makes it somewhat sound like you have to separately set the A/B speaker switch? What happens when you plug in headphones? At least the headphone jack, as opposed to a record out, would have volume control....but due impedance and output level may not work well...personally I wouldn't.

The headphones don`t mute the speakers, which in my case is a plus, but I thought that using the speaker out plugs from the amp will be a more elegant solution. This way I could enable/disable the sub at a press of a button. I tried the headphone out with another sub (KEF PSW2010) that had only line in`s and everything worked fine, but I sold it, because it didn`t suit me well. The AVR upgrage will have to wait, more than less time, cause my gear is quite new and I don`t have the space, neither the money to go that far. Thank you!

I was not aware that you were in Romania. It appears that you already have the BasX S8 anyways. Missed that initially. However, having good bass management does really make a significant difference. I had to learn that the hard way. Trust me, it was no fun. :):):)

No problem, Phil. The BasX S8 will only arrive in the first week of december.

I know that this isn`t the ideal situation, but I`ll be more than happy if I can make it work somehow.

Spoke with a guy that works with speakers, amps etc. and he assured me that what I want is achievable.
I kinda trust him, but other "successful stories" for the usage of such adapters would have relieved the suspense. Second opinions generally help.

Appreciate all your great recommendations.

Best regards,

Alex
