I have a Sony STR-DH500 that I got years ago. It was my first AVR, and it's treated me well. I've now graduated to a Denon X4300H, but I'd like to re-purpose the Sony. It still works fine.

My question is what exactly would I be missing by using the DH500 for stereo music in another room? And I mean primarily from a SQ perspective. I already know I'll be missing all the modern conveniences and decoders. I don't need the decoders and I can stream with something else. Is there anything undesirable about the output of this thing?

Why do you assume you'd be missing something? Use it and don't worry about it.

I appreciate the reassurance. I wasn’t really assuming it was bad. I just know a lot of you guys here are particular about stereo setups and know things I don’t. I see a lot of talk about different receiver brands sounding warmer, brighter, etc. I’m not sure my ears are even that good, but thought I would ask.

I’d also like to request recommendations for a set of speakers for the new setup. I’ve seen lots of praise for the AA’s. I’m considering those or something else in that price range. It’s a large room, but listening levels will typically be pretty low. I thought something horn loaded might fill the room more evenly. Is that a correct assumption?

The usual set of questions is; what is your budget, will it be mainly music or movies as well and are you in the USA?

Are these to go with the DH500?

You're not far off with the assumption on horns, but not all will do the job equally good.

This is the AVR, right?

The whole warmer/brighter thing for a brand's entire lineup doesn't even make sense. Not my experience with several brands and models of avr either. Some people just get silly about 2ch audio IMO. Another plus for your avr is you can add a sub and have bass management over a lot of 2ch gear that doesn't...

I built a set of the BR-1s the AAs are based on (and have on a back burner some crossovers I bought from Dennis for a future diy pair); they're my L/R speakers in my workshop (19 x 21') setup now and doubt you'll have any issues in a largish room at low listening levels....how far away from the speakers and what spl do you consider "low", tho?
