Hello everyone...my first post here so please be kind...

Just getting back into this super expensive hobby and I need some advice on what I need to spend my hard earned bucks on next. Below is a list of my components. I have been slowly accumulating and upgrading as I can but now I am a little stumped as to what to do next...

I have a fairly large record collection and have accumulated a large collection of FLAC files. Don't stream much music at all because I don't really have a streamer in my Two Channel setup. Want to spend my money wisely with your help. See any true weak spots? I have about $2000.00 set aside as of today burning a whole in my pocket!

Your advice would be greatly appreciated! BTW...I have a separate Home theater setup so just 2.1 channel please

Micromega PC-20 Preamp
Emotive XPA2-Gen 3 Amp
TEAC UD-H01 DAC
Cambridge Audio Azur 351C CD Player
TEAC TN-300 Turntable w/ upgraded Ortofon 2M Red Stylus
Usher N-6300 Standmount speakers
David 302 Subwoofer

Thanks!

Seems like something to play your flac files thru this setup would be in order....

Mistook what you said about not having a streamer. Doubt a change in DAC would do anything at all. Maybe just buy more stuff to listen to? :) Hard to know what you're not happy with. Speakers and sub could always use upgrading...electronics, meh.

Speakers are always a good upgrade I think. My sub is a cheapie but they do add to the music for sure. I do like my Usher speakers though they are not well know in North America.

Thanks for the advice!

I would agree with @lovinthehd , often times the best bang for the buck in upgrading an otherwise solid system is to start with your speakers. Perhaps, the better question to ask is "what is it about your current system that you feel falls short? What is it that causes you to chaff when you listen?"

If you have a more specific itch to scratch, its easier to give on-target advice. I understand having the upgrade itch. It can be bad. Even if there's nothing to upgrade, that won't stop the itch. If you could think on that a bit and describe what you think is a shortfall I guarantee we can spend your $2K with no problem at all.:)

Welcome to AH.

Why do you think you need to upgrade? What is it that is wrong with your system?

Doubt you need a new DAC. You seem to like your speakers. While the sub is not a theater quality sub, high punch and spl, music is not like that, mostly.
So, short of perhaps some room acoustic that involves measuring where the issues may be,
I don't see a real need. Save some more. Maybe that theater needs upgrading?

Usher, is certainly known here among the DIY speaker market at least.

The most noticeable improvement would likely be the replacement of the subwoofer with a pair of subs such as SVS, Rythmik, Hsu brands, or the new Monoprice Monoliths. If you have the space, you could opt for vented subs for higher efficiency and lower distortion and you can find several reviews on this site as well.

Another option might be, as mentioned by mtrycrafts, to explore room acoustic response improvement if you believe there is an obvious possibility , with a product such as the free REW software and/or one of the MiniDSP products which are well rated on several forums.

I've heard the Ushers, we have a dealer here. They are very well respected and they sound really good (X-718 were on display). I would (subjectively) describe them as being closer to some Sonus Faber, slightly laid back and smooth. I loved listening to trumpets on these, there's no screeching and they're much more pleasant. Don't know about your model.

As people here already said, it's either going for a significantly better speakers and 2k won't get all three of them to be that much better or invest in some calculations and room equalization. i'm no expert, but nothing seems to be wrong with your equipment.

If you're going for a bigger sound, it is also important to know your room dimensions. And I do think that might ask for more than 2k.

I'd have to agree with everyone here. Sounds like a good setup but if u insist on spending your good hard earned money I'd replace the sub-woofer (SVS, Seaton) & speakers (too may great models to go into detail).

As you've gathered by now...upgrading speakers typically gives you the most bang for your buck on an upgrade.

Your n6300s seem to have a nice driver pkg...without knowing what you would like to accomplish, to gain an appreciable SQ improvement over your existing speakers, you might need to spend to the max on your $2k budget.

I would advise to lay low for now...maybe add to the music selection as I saw mentioned...get out and demo some speakers if possible.

IMO, serious music listening is a lot more demanding, high-fidelity wise, than the acoustic precision required for watching movies.
Using only one sub is not an ideal situation if one wants to benefit from a more balanced frequency rendition. It is easier to obtain a smoother response by using two or even more subwoofers, depending on the size of the listening room. An important factor in the decision to go for multiple subs is the type of music and the lowest frequencies to be reproduced. For instance, if the audiophile likes to listen to pipe organ and electronic keyboard, he will benefit from having adequate subwoofing.

Classical organ, symphonic, choral and operatic music can demand dynamic peaks in excess of 30db. Amplifier power with adequate headroom driving one or several subwoofers is recommended, more so if the main speakers are not designed to handle the power required and cannot reproduce the input subwoofer frequencies.

Of course, finally the type of required equipment depends on other factors such as the listening distance from the speakers, the peak SPL levels aimed, the spouse acceptance factor etc.

To play off of verdinuts post I would say yes as well. Better subwoofers are more linear in the passband, and exhibit better driver control. That leads to a better experience no matter what the source material. I think the OP’s sub is probably the weakest link in his system.

Look at the Philharmonic BMR Philharmonitor speakers
http://www.philharmonicaudio.com/BMR Philharmonitor.html
Good choice...the Phil is a 3 way speaker...RAAL vs Be. I like the RAAL ribbon and Be, but lean towards the RAAL...lots of debate there.

He's got a pretty good speaker now and I was thinking he'd need to spend more than $2k to realize a SQ improvement, but I'm guessing this speaker would offer a SQ improvement within his budget.

Thanks for all the advise...really appreciate it! I actually went out and upgraded both my Turntable and Subwoofer. The new lineup is as follows...

Micromega PC-20 Preamp
Emotive XPA2-Gen 3 Amp
TEAC UD-H01 DAC
Cambridge Audio Azur 351C CD Player
Music Hall MMF 5.3 Turntable
Usher N-6300 Standmount speakers
Mordaunt-Short Aviano 9 Subwoofer

Got great deals on both the turntable and the sub. I think now I shall rest and enjoy my system. Save up some money and get a REALLY NICE set of speakers. Leaning towards Harbeth or maybe B&W.

Any suggestions on what my DREAM speakers should be?

Thanks
John
