Given a Theater set-up. Wondering if everything "jives" well.

Hey, everyone!

So a good friend of mine is getting stationed overseas and would not have the room for his audio setup for pretty cheap, I adopted his loss and I just want to know if this is a decent setup or if there is anything that is a definite red flag No.

5.2.2

The receiver is an Onkyo TX-NR777
All speakers are Klipsch
center: RP-450Ca
Towers: R-26F
Atmos: RP-140Sa
Surrounds: SS-1
Subs: R-10SW

i have everything hooked up and set with the receivers auto-setup. seems to sound great but i have a few questions.

Since some are basic and some are premier, is this a big issue?
i don't really hear the difference of 2 subs over 1. should i play around with the Phase option and the gains? i have them wired for LFE.
Should i consider calling a professional to inspect and correct the settings?

thanks everyone for all the help.

It's a decent setup. Not gonna blow most of the socks off around here, but probably better than 90% or 95% of your friends and coworkers setups.

The first weak point is the Subs! Those can easily be bested by an ID brand.

Onkyo tends to run a bit on the warm side, so be careful of that. Give it plenty of breathing room!

2 subs is more for getting an even response across all listening positions. So, if you walk around the room, you may hear the difference of 1 vs 2 subs.

+1 for slippery. Sub is the weak link there.

Awesome guys. Thanks!

Should I keep everything same brand?

I feel like this is obvious, but would the upgrade to the higher tier floor speakers be appropriate? The "RP-26f" is Klipsch top line.

Would the receiver become a weak link pushing all Premier speakers if I went that route?

I hear great things about this SS-1 on review sites. Wondering if anyone has a personal opinion. Klipsch didn't keep the model running so I wonder if their newer surrounds could be better.

The last one, upgrade the two 10inch subs to a 15inch be ideal for a smaller space?

Thanks for educating a newbie. The search button is helping me a lot too.

haha, I wasn't expecting to knock anyone's socks off with the setup. I just wanted a senior audio-head to check my work.

I would think that would depend on what you want, how much of a good punch you want from movies that cater to the sub. ;)
How small is small and is it an apartment? If it is, better keep the 10s.;)

The speaker mix doesn't mean a lot, best to have a match across the fronts if anywhere.

Not really supposed to hear a difference with two subs particularly, but rather, as was said, better response over more seats (smoother frequency response thru the room due to the way sub frequencies work in your room). You may need to adjust phase or even the distance (delay) setting in your avr for optimum results. The Onkyo AccuEQ setup isn't the best.

A professional to setup isn't necessary unless you just like throwing money at things.

Mmmh, I just need someone with a better ear and knowledge than I to set it up. It sounds good to me, but my ears are like my pallet. Bland chicken and rice are just as good as a 16oz porterhouse to me.

If that's the case, you definitely don't need to pay anyone else to tweak your system. Read up here on how to improve your existing gear. Adjusting speaker / seating position can do amazing things. Just keep learning and try to make it sound better to you. After all it's you that will be listening to it. ;)

Let's just hope that you can tell the difference between those two bland foods. ;) :D

I think you are the best judge of what sounds or tastes good TO YOU. Others' tastes may not suit you. It's subjective....so far sounds like you're doing fine. I'd also upgrade the subs personally.
