Busy indeed, but I'd have it no other way. I think you'd have fun playing them. Although I do like mike v's beautiful/simple gretch.
That floor Tom on the left @Pogre is an 18"er. Love that thing. I'm lucky to have room for all that stuff.
I'll bet it's almost like having a third leg on a kick drum, huh? I know I'd have a blast on your kit. Looks like it gets some use too! That's awesome. Sometimes I regret selling mine. My neighbors are happier tho!

As far as op's minimalist kit goes, my buddy Darren (who got me going) used to say that if you can lay down a groove on a small kit and make it tasty, you can play on any kit. I think for a while Rage's drummer used just a kick, 1 cymbal, a hi hat and his pork-pie snare (maybe 1 tom?) and he can play. You don't even miss all the extra stuff found on most hard rock kits. Darren used to say it forces you to be more creative.

I'd do exactly what op is doing. Start small and if you get the itch it's easy to add more gear to a kit. I never got good enough to really go anywhere with it but I played in my house for years and wouldn't take it back. Learning to play music was, for me, a fantastic experience.

I'm just learning to play, so what I have is probably overkill for me. But I knew I could find a nice used quality set for a decent price in Houston - how many wealthy parents buy their kids brand new, top of the line drum sets for their kids, only to have them lose interest in a year or less?

But somehow, for some reason, I cannot force myself to buy used speakers for my room. I got to have new, latest technology. I expect to have them until I die, and hopefully my kids will fight over them at the funeral.

Another often overlooked aspect to speaker choices is the price of the cabinets when it comes to overall sound quality. Part of the decision process needs to consider how much high end furniture is being included. I've been involved in woodworking most of my working life and i know how fast that can add up. It was one of the reasons i chose the DIY route.

Often times, $2000 speakers could as well perform the same as $1000 speakers when it comes down to the working bits.

ETA: In other words, all such things considered....I can be happy with the working part of speakers in the $350-900.00 range ( scale considered) and is how I tend to gauge them these days.

Hey poges, indeed I love the left side floor Tom. It's great for triplets with the kicks(think end of schism). But it's good for accents and different punctuation. Darren is a wise man. Laying down a groove and staying tight in the pocket feels and sounds amazing. Even though I love using all the junk on my kit, the simple groove is sometimes just what you need. I have two other 5pc kits up there too. One of them is the very fist kit I ever got. Ironically, I'm the first and fourth owner of it. I agree, learning to play, any instrument is really a special thing. I'm sure you had your reasons to sell your drums, but I believe, that sux...
Ok Mike, you can have your thread back. Lol
Sorry about that.
