I have recently bought a new home theater system. Driving the system is a Denon AVR-X2300W. I have a Samsung 4K DVD player, and a full SVS 5.1 Prime Tower and surround speaker system. I have a new Sony Smart HDTV as well(850 series 55") Problems I am having:
1. Connect my iPhone thru the front panel USB port on Denon - no sound
I find that if I put the TV on, shut down the Denon, then restart the Denon, I get Audio thru the system (sometimes).
2. Put on TV, Denon, and then DVD. Put DVD in - only plays sound thru the TV. If I shut the Denon down and restart it, the TV shows speakers changing to external speakers and I get sound thru the system.
Cannot figure out why I am having these issues. Why should the TV have anything to do with simple playback of iPod materiasl thru a USB? Why do I have to turn the Denon on and off before I can play a DVD thru the surround sound?
I have attached a few photos, do I have it wired wrong? Am I missing any cables?
Please help.

Your problem sounds like a problem I encounter with my new Denon x4200w.
My Denon x4200w recieves audio via HDMI from an Mac Mini media server. (Similar to a usb ipod)
My Denon also is attached to a flat panel TV that is the console for the Mac Mini and the display for the Denon when I call up the menus. Everything is attached via HDMI cables.
It works great, except when I shut down the system out of order, or, sometimes, power it up out of order. The HDMI handshakes get confused and the audio goes to my internal headphone jack on the Mac Mini instead of out through the Denon to the speakers. I'll save you how I solved it and figured it out but I've figured it out.
I need to power up the Denon first before I power up the flat panel TV (the Mac Mini is on all the time).
For powering down, I need to power down the Denon first and then the flat panel TV. (the Mac Mini stays on all the time and puts itself to sleep). If I stick to the right sequence, it works like a charm. If I power stuff up or off out of sequence, my audio most probably wont go out the Denon because the Mac Mini will default to its internal sound path.
Someone explained the source of the condition as being in the HDMI handshake. Its not broken, it just gets confused. That's my story. Its sounds similar to yours. I have found an easy workaround that just entails powering up and down in a sequence.
