Music /Listening Room - Starting from scratch

MV...that's great to hear.

Obviously speakers have the final carry of the signal that we call music....my objective with the system upgrade...get as close as possible to the live sound whether it be for recording or an audience for the money. I've heard live music in many different venues, large and small. My system of 20 yrs did a pretty good job of delivering on parts of that, but not all.

In my demo phase, I found that speakers in that $2k to $3k range were very good...20 yrs old but I have pretty good speakers now and I felt they were somewhat lateral to most of those.....speakers in the $5k to $6k range seem to check all of the boxes...The Salks I ordered are less than $4k and my expectation is a performance in the same vein or better as those $5 -$6k speakers.

The Philharmonic3...might be the best value you can get under $4k anywhere...they are large imposing speakers so they didn't work for me, but they highly touted drivers and a industry noted crossover artist/designer/engineer Dennis Murphy. One of the AH posters, The Warrior has a pair.

My main point is opening up your speaker budget I think will do wonders for the end result.

I had a loose number in my head for an overall budget, but I'm not likely to do this again anytime soon so I didn't want to make too many SQ compromises I might regret later because my budget was not high enough...I was thinking 50% of my loose number on the speakers which was $7k max...with a lot of time invested here and researching I was able to come in under budget by $1200+...of course I have been spending some of that on some new tunes ;).

I have 3+k song on itunes and recently shifted everything over to JRiver v23...

Superior management tool, player, pretty smart too...anytime I add to my itunes acct, the files automatically import to JRiver. I've yet to really dive into all the features, but setting up playlists, etc, basic functions I learned on the fly pretty quickly...well worth the fee for the standard one time license.

Wow, those Philharmonic3's are huge! I'm looking for an understated, minimalist room design, and these speakers would completely dominate the room! I bet they sound great, though...

I could find only 1 higher end music store open on the weekend today - Modia on Westheimer in Houston. The sales guy told me I could go into the listening room once another customer was done. When it was my turn, he asked what I was looking for, and I mentioned that I cannot find a Klipsch dealer anywhere in Houston with Heritage series speakers to listen to, and he told me you can find Klipsch speakers at Target. Harsh. Not sure he knows about the Heritage line.

Turns out his store only sold B&W speakers, so I countered his Target comment with a "those sure are the trendiest speakers these days, they are everywhere." Touche.

Once he realized I wasn't an idiot and knew a little about music, he was very nice. I think he appreciated the "trendy" jab, and respected me a little more after I fought back. LOL

He left the room while i listened, and the CM10s were very nice. I closed my eyes and I could really hear some nice 3D imaging - it was like I was in a room and could locate the instruments at different parts of the room. These would be at the top of my price range - he offered them for $4,000 for the pair, but I can see online they are being discounted recently, several hundred dollars below that. Don't think they impressed me enough to pay that much for them, though.

Still what an ass. Good for you for zinging him back. This is one reason why so many B & M stores are going under. They act like primadona butt plugs. I have one dealer nearby but unfortunately he deals with video more than audio and has little audio stock. Whatever the dealer sells, it's the best ever. Always do your research and this is a great place for help.

As a long time and current owner of B&W speakers...the best values are the 800 series Nautilus, or D1...which you can find on ebay. D2s were not really much different from D1 from my understanding and the D3 stuff is off the charts expensive. Hold off...You can find a pair of used 803 for $3k maybe $3.5k.

B&Ws are excellent at imaging.

Metro HOU should have a Golden Ear, Monitor Audio or Revel dealer...the Triton 2+ and 3 are worth listening to...the MA Gold 300 is a great speaker...but I really think you should hear the Revel F206.

OK, I have discovered, after much frustration, that the higher end music store is all but dead across the country, not withstanding a few hold out stores. The 4th largest city in the US is deadsville in this respect, so I am going to be buying expensive equipment without listening first. I assume return policies allow me to return a purchase that is just not working out?

I have to move forward. Speaker decision will be made today.

SVS offers a 45 day in home trial. If you don't like them send back and they'll cover shipping both ways.

I missed the part where you're learning to play the drums. I started in my late 20's, but never got good enough to be worthy of note. As far as the age thing, I wish I had started much younger. Good drummers make it look effortless. I always looked like I was forcing it. Muscle memory comes faster and easier when you're young.

Just trying to keep my aging mind and body in shape as I age. Plus it's fun, and nobody has to hear me play. LOL.

Drums are great for that. It'll keep you mentally sharp too, imo. Have fun with it!

Now I am leaning towards the Cornwall IIIs... I am afraid the Heresy IIIs will not be enough to fill a 16'x20' room, so I am thinking Forte IIIs or Cornwall IIIs...

Anybody have any opinion on these three? I will be listening to all types of music, quiet & loud. Will the Cornwall IIIs do everything better? What about speaker placement? Do Cornwalls have to go into corners to sound best? I would rather not put them quite that far apart.

I am rather fond of my Gretches... I believe in simplicity. LOL

You cannot play a high-hat on mushy carpet, so our cork wood floor will be installed in a few weeks, I hope.

Nice looking kit. Perfect jazz setup.

My room is 14 x20 and my H3's fill the room fine. They get help from the subs too, therefore a little deficient at lower extension. I too have thought about the Cornwall's. I'd be interested in others opinions as well.

As far as placement you don't have to corner load them. Might get better bass if you did, but it might make them too boomy.

These are beginning to get pricey. I'd sure like to hear them before I plunked down $$$.

Sonor drums with birch shells, Aquarian heads, Zildjian K cymbals... and a couple other things that I'm forgetting about.

Hell yeah. @William Lemmerhirt has double bass drums! And 3 floor toms? That's a pretty busy kit. Looks like a lot of fun though.
Busy indeed, but I'd have it no other way. I think you'd have fun playing them. Although I do like mike v's beautiful/simple gretch.
That floor Tom on the left @Pogre is an 18"er. Love that thing. I'm lucky to have room for all that stuff.
