Help needed with record player speaker system

I recently purchased a Tech Play record player with built in speakers (model # ODC17BT). After about a week of listening I decided I wanted a bigger sound. So I purchased some Insignia Powered Speakers (model NS-HBTSS116). Everything I read online said that my player should have a built in pre amp and if I just connect the speakers using an RCA cable the sound should produce from the speakers. Well the sound does come from the speakers but it is at a significantly muted volume, worse than the built in speakers.

Is there some user error on my end or is this type of record player just not compatable with outside speakers.

I would appreciated any help or insight you can provide.

Thank you!

You probably need a phono preamp as the input on the speakers isn't matched correctly. Just because the tech play says it has a pre built in doesn't mean it works with all inputs on other equipment. The level of quality of your gear doesn't lend itself to plug and play. I'd suggest purchase a TT and a preamp to drive any powered speakers.

I appreciate the response and advice!

I think I am going to start over and purchase a new player because I have been having issues with the tech play.

What player and other equipment would you recommend to match with my speakers (not sure if I need to purchase a receiver or not)? I am a beginner so I'm not looking to break the bank but I also don't want to go cheap and run into similar problems.

Thanks again!

Budget will always drive recommended products. Is this for a small room? Large? Is the TT your only music source? This hobby can drain ya :D

Haha I hear ya.

The set up would be for a smaller living room.

I have other music sources throughout the house that I use but I recently came across a bunch of old vinyls and I've always been interested in collecting as well. So really I'm just looking to play the records at decent volume and sound in that particular room (nothing else would be hooked up to the system).
