New Monoprice Subs!

Lol, glad monoprice is finding a niche, their products seem to perform well. I just hope someday manufacturer data is as useful as the side of a tire!

I have been trying to find some more specifics on said subs, but only to no avail. They look nice from the pics. But, that doesn't really mean much of anything. There is a lot of competition in those posted price ranges of $500, $800, and $1300 for the 10", 12" and the 15" respectively speaking. Only time will tell how they actually stack up eh?

Need more info, but first impressions are...meh....

Dollar for dollar, the Monoprice subs don't look like anything special against what ID subwoofer vendors are delivering these days. A Monoprice 10"/500W/$500 or 12"/500W/$800 ported subs vs the Hsu VTF2.5 and VTF3.5 respectively? No thanks. As for the 15", it'll have its work cut out trying to compete against the FV15HP and V1801.

And of course beyond price vs performance, there are those little details like support. Historically when I've pinged SVS, PSA, JTR, Funk, etc., I'm talking to people like Ed Mullen, Tom Vodhandel, Jeff Permanian, and Nathan Funk. I can't say I'd expect a similar level of attention from a company mostly known for selling bulk cable at low low prices.

PS: This guy from last year looked a lot more interesting, even if it was vaporware with bullshit specs.

Very well spoken Steve. I agree 100%. Just seen this and thought that I would share. It is good to see Monoprice offering more variety, but at the specified prices there is plenty of competition. BTW, I had to go edit my original post b/c the 15" is $1,300! I thought it was $1,000. Looks to be a hard sale for Monoprice. Time will tell.

I'm pretty sure these subs will be solid performers. Since they are THX-Select and THX-Ultra certified, it's clear what they are capable of. That said, THX certification is an expensive way to publish specs and overall capability. An expense which is clearly passed on to the customer.

Not necessarily. They way it can work is that the OEM can produce THX certified products for different companies and be the license holder for the all the end products rather than the all the OBMs having to pay that fee separately. As I understand it, the fees to use the THX logo can be quite expensive, but the actual process of certification is not too expensive.

Who doesn't want more subwoofers! They are in a pretty competitive market at those prices. Hsu still looks like it's the bang for buck option.

Quite frankly I'm am extremely surprised at kinda the negative time this thread has taken. It's just some subwoofers. I have feeling you are looking at this the same way Porge. I mean more subs in the market, quality subs is a good thing, not bad.

I dunno. I don't think the comments are overly negative. Just some discussion on certification vs licensing.

Same thing could be said about SVS and Rythmik. Front-ported, front-firing, variable-tuned subwoofers are bound to end up resembling each other. That does not mean they are the same though, as Hsu, SVS, and Rythmik are all quite different from each other, even though they share the same basic cabinet arrangement.

On paper, sure. But the actual style and dimensions of the cabinets made me think HSU. SVS went the retail route already, and this concept would seem to underscore what Rythmik does. Of course there's still a bunch more brands that do actively seek THX certification, just the concept struck me as logical if this is indeed a HSU collaboration. Anyway....
