I'm sure it works if one has the proper setup, i.e. ceiling speakers, as opposed to the 'bouncy-house' effect.
Indeed. Setup is absolutely important, and I agree bouncy speakers are much less effective. I was just saying it's legit.

Less effective doesn't mean it doesn't work. Ideally, you need to have enough ceiling height from Atmos to be diffuse, rather than directed with in-ceiling speakers.

Agreed, and there will be differing levels of "less/more" effectiveness. I was trying to say that if both arrangements(bouncy vs ceiling mount) are implemented to the best of each ones parameters, in optimal rooms, ceiling speakers will give a better presentation. Even if the room and "enabled" speakers are set up optimally, they'll be "less effective".

Oh yea, agree on that, directed with enough height is the best way to go.

Off I go to find a house that will support a basement 14 ft ceiling HT ;)

Looking to get some advice on how many ceiling speakers I should install to get the best immersive experience. I have a dedicated HT room that is 21x18.5x8. My original plan was four speakers but my research has me thinking that 6 would be needed to get the best experience. Of course, this is going to require a new receiver. I am currently running a 7.2 configuration. Any advice regarding Atmos or DTX would be appreciated.

Panasonic-TC-P65VT50
Marantz-SR6007
Emotiva-XPA-3
Oppo-BDP-103
Apperion-Verus Grand Towers and Center
-Verus Forte Satellites
Two HSU VTF-15H MK2 Subs
A bit late to the party here Ras, but I am running a 5.2.4 atmos system.

I'm using relatively cheap Polk in ceiling speakers...RC80ci I think. I started out with 2, played a few movies and liked the immersive experience so I went ahead and got 2 more. Worth it...Because those are individual channels they can do some interesting stuff like thunder rolling from one atmos speaker to another.

I've been to in store demos with a Klipsch atmos enabled system and another with in ceiling atmos speakers and I want to say Paradigm was the other room...both were effective, but the same movie scenes with overhead sound seemed more realistic imo with the in ceiling...if you have the ceiling access like I did, in ceiling was a fairly easy choice.

I want to thank everyone for their input, it's making my decision process a lot easier. Looks like overhead speakers are the way to go. As of right now I am considering Aperions L6-IC. They have tweeters that are moveable so it will give me a little flexibility and will be timbre matched with my other Aperion speakers. I am open to other brands that would compliment my Aperions. Any recommendations?

Ras the L6-IC looks to be a great option....it's never a bad move to timbre match speakers. But, based on the content the surround and atmos channels typically get in movies especially, there is no real need to timbre match your atmos speakers.

You will probably do fine with four 6" IC speakers with an 8' ceiling...I have 9' ceiling height and went with four 8" IC speakers, but not the quality of those you are considering.
