IN NEED OF SOME EXPERIENCED ADVICE

Alright everybody, update

Just got the new at95e cart, 45" adapters, and the alignment protractor. The track force gauge/scale would be here in the am.

Good news: great purchase, everything fits, setup is one step closer to being compete.

Bad news: playback on the vinyls is off. If I didn't have a working cart before, I would have no reference our context to judge. However, the playback is definitely now slow and choppy.

My assumption is that I probably installed and set the cart incorrectly? I keep hearing that one wrong move can throw the whole thing off.

So, opinion time.
I used the protractor and the stylus/cart are centered on the bulls eye/grid. If not, pretty darn close.
Again, I don't have the scale yet, so if tracking force can be the culprit, ill find out tomorrow.

Besides checking that the force is accurate, any other ideas as to what specifically will cause the playback to be inaccurate? It might be obvious, so lay it on me.

Im going too watch some videos, but any other input will definitely help. Be as specific as you can, I get the idea behind all of this, just not specifics or the science

Thanks in advance as usual
Cheers

What tracking force setting are you using? How about a pic of your cartridge as setup? What else did you use besides a protractor?

Your protractor use provided for setting overhang? I wonder if there's any appreciable difference in cartridge height between the original cartridge and the replacement since it doesn't appear you have a tonearm height adjustment to compensate.

I have a couple turntables, and I have hundreds of records. Stuff like this is why I rarely use them nor would I ever encourage anyone to get into vinyl. It's an awful lot of hassle for sound that demonstrably inferior.

Oh crap..... I didn't even realize there was an optimal setting for exact overhang. I thought as long as the cart was as close/perfect to the bulls eye on the protractor, then I was set... UGH, but that makes sense. Every little thing matters in this game.

Ok, so to answer your question, I didn't set the overhang by any specific means. I need to look into the exact measurement, or at least the science behind overhang a little more... planning on youtubing all day today haha

I'm going to check on the size of the original and replacement cart... they looked pretty darn close to the same size.

It sucks that I don't have and can't find the manual for this turn table... looked everywhere I could, no luck. Let me know if anyone has any idea how to obtain one

I'll update once I gather more info
Thanks @lovinthehd

I tried without success on the manual too.

UPDATE

I just watched a crap ton of videos.... I didn't realize HOW much I didn't know haha

First off, the tracking pressure dial on the back of the tone arm CAN MOVE ON ITS OWN. I feel like such an idiot for this one. NOW it makes sense when I kept reading and hearing about zeroing out the pressure, balancing it, THEN moving the weight to the preferred pressure. Unreal, that was so much easier than I was making it out to be

Second, the cart was not as close as I could make it to perfect. I've made some serious progress on that front. ALSO (another derp moment), I removed the head from the tonearm to better adjust the cart.... yes, I know, "you were installing a new cart with the head STILL attached to the tone arm before?!" ... SADLY YES. But all is well now, I took a good half hour making little adjustments to that installation, and is now spot on.

So after all of this, I now have an accurate pressure reading (still going to double check it when the scale gets here) of 2(ish), anti skate at 2, a new, WORKING cart, and new shelves to set the system up on.

HERE is where it gets interesting.
I know, the TT is not the greatest, we've been down this road.
BUT, this morning is where I realized what was sounding "off", as I stated in that other post.
THE TT IS TURNING TOO SLOW. I used a [somewhat accurate, maybe not 100% perfect] app on the phone to read the RPM. I was sitting uncomfortably at 32.5. It's not terrible, but I put on an album and as soon as it started I knew it was slow. I double checked by playing the CD right after... I was right. I took it a couple steps further and tried another song, another record.... everything is too slow.

It's not fluctuating, the arm and stylus aren't moving in or out. Honestly, everything is working GREAT. Even though it's slow, the quality and sound are actually amazing!

I've read this could be either the belt or the motor.
I took off the rubber mat, carefully removed the platter, and checked the belt. This TT is older, and I don't know much about the inner workings, but the belt SEEMS fine. It's still somewhat snug on the under side of the platter. I don't know how tight it's SUPPOSED to be, but there is a little bit of looseness to let it reach the motor pulley (too loose?). When I rotate the center spindle with my fingers, it's not choppy. It's smooth, fluid.

So, would this most likely be a belt or motor issue? I know how to replace a belt, but I really don't want to spend a bunch of money on a new motor on this thing lol

Almost there, throw me any ideas you can think of
Thanks!

Better turntables have adjustments for speed, but lacking that perhaps it is the belt having stretched over the years (at least on the first cup o'coffee that seems to make sense), but wonder what replacement belt would be available. Not a belt drive guy so not sure.

Found a retailer

I think if this isn't a fix, I'll just have to deal until I can afford a new table all together

Fingers crossed!

It's a significant portion of the value of the tt is the way I look at it, if you're serious about going forward (back?) into vinyl then maybe time to just get a better tt....you have a new cartridge already! :)

I would have to agree at this point
I've learned so much already... I'm getting to understand how important EVERY piece really is. I didn't want to just spend money on a new one just because I was getting into it. But now..... yeaaaaaaaa, it starting to sound like a good idea haha

You're right lol at least I can take the new cart with me if I need

I bought a good one 30 plus years ago, still using it (Technics SL1200 mk2).

Hate to say it, but without being able to adjust the speed, I don't think a new belt would be worth it...more than likely...will find when you replace the belt you will run into issues as the new one will loosen up over time, or might find that the motor itself has been worn out and not up to par. maybe find a technics on Craigslist ebay whatnot, could prolly find a dirt cheap deal on one without a cartridge. Make sure it has all of these features and go from there. I don't see it as you being out money yet as everything you have purchased so far can be used on another table (as long it's a standard mount cart)

The Technics 202 ad was gone, the Gemini I'm not familiar with but looks like a Technics 1200 clone of some sort for DJ use....hard to know how abused it may be.
Yeah, first one was being sold AS I emailed, and the second one was NOT local at all

Ok then. Round 3 haha

Im on the lookout for a newer turn table, phono, pitch adjustment, standard mount, with or without a cart, I'm shooting for [preferably] less than 150...

You've all helped guide me this far, what you got?

@pewternhrata Any preference on technics model?
