Sony HCD-SBT100 AM/FM Receiver antenna question

Hi, I just bought a used Sony HCD-SBT100 AM/FM receiver. Problem is, the little "loop" antenna that comes with it won't pick up the FM station I like. I want to connect it to a rooftop antenna, but the antenna jack on the receiver is a 3 wire Sony plug (for the loop antenna..1 wire is for AM). I contacted Sony support who had no idea..said to contact an electronics store. I also tried to lookup the receivers specs to see if the current antenna is 75 ohms or 300 or ? Could not find that info either. Sorry I bought this thing. Does anybody happen to know if I can simply connect the 2 FM wires from the 3 wire plug to my rooftop antenna coax? Or would you know where I can find an "adapter" plug? thanks!!

That’s definitely a proprietary connection, since it’s basically combining AM and FM in a single antenna (that looks like an AM antenna, I might add). So anything related to it will have to come from Sony. However, if you can identify which two wires are for FM and connect to a different antenna, it should work.

Thanks Wayne! I'll give it a try today.. the 3 wires on this "loop" antenna.. the two outer wires are wrapped around it, the middle wire is loose...maybe 7 or 8 feet long.. I'm guessing the loose wire is the AM antenna. So, I think I'll go fer the two outer wires..

I'd try it. Those radio signals are very low voltage and shouldn't hurt anything. It's only a guess, but the two wires – as opposed to coaxial wire – suggest that its 300 ohms.

When you plugged in that loop antenna, did you try moving it to face in different directions?

For an adapter plug, if it exists, I'd try looking at Parts Express. For what its worth, Sony seems to use what is also called a Meco loop antenna. See the photos on the link. Maybe that name might help to search for an adapter plug.
