As far as I'm concerned an HTPC is by far the best device for streaming. It s flexible and you have pretty much instant access to anything out there.

I do not use a TV as the source ever on any of my systems, and would never consider doing so. I have no time for ROKU, Firetsticks or any of those devices. The only streaming device I do use sometimes is Chromecast which is brilliant. That is mainly used on my vintage rig, that has no receiver, just an HDMI auto switcher.

Receivers, pre pros and TVs are not the units to do streaming from.

What is required is a high quality unit ahead of a pre pro or good receiver.
Couple of points.

I do agree that using a TV as the main source is not ideal. I myself have a Sony TV with Android TV built in. It's great aside from the audio issues that have already been covered.

I too used to use ONLY an HTPC, but 4k and HDR have thrown a wrench into that. HTPCs are not capable of properly playing back this content seamlessly. It's a huge pain to get it to work properly.

I've got an Nvidia Shield TV box that will play back anything. It's as close to a perfect device as I've been able to find. I use enough streaming services that maintaining an HTPC to work the same way is all but impossible.

I never would have thought something could replace my HTPCs, but it has happened.

Once I get my theater up and going a Shield TV will be the only source.

The issue here is that 4K is unnecessary. There is no point to it. What I can tell you from dealing with it with my son, is that the current top end 4K Tvs are far inferior to earlier TVs video compression artifacts required for streaming in particular seem to really upset 4K TVs. Movement artifact is a particularly troublesome issue.

4K TVs are over sold and at this time and possible for ever, should be avoided.

My son is upset he ever got tempted to go 4K, and he has exchanged TVs between bands. He is upset as he can't get a picture nearly as good as I get on my two Panny plasmas. Now way will I have anything to do with 4K. If you have a good 2K system going 4K will almost certainly be a downgrade and what ever your system is NOT worth the hassle and inconvenience. If you are smart you will run fast away from it.

I've been seriously considering a new, bigger tv. I've also been considering going 1080p to save a few bucks and maybe get a better quality unit. I think I'd need 70" to even consider it worthwhile. I have the room for 85" easily tho. They do go up in price almost exponentially after 60" or so.

4k yes, HDR no. HDR is very necessary. I'm going to have a projector in the theater that supports HDR so I want to be able to view my content.

I lik my sony HDR tv, but it is inferior to my plasma when comes overall PQ. HDR changes that, but the LCD still has the artifacts that sll LCDs have.

Drop down screen + light cannon projector. Done. It's not like you've made any big purchases lately.

Thanks all. That was enlightening stuff about audio and, as a bonus, about video too.
