Sub gain ? Is it normal -

After running the audyssey program, is it normal to have to put 5 to 8 db back in the subs to really be able to hear them good?
I know this is a preference thing but even after I sit the bookshelves on small and cross them at 80 , I still have to turn the subs up a good bit to really get everything I'm looking for out of them.

It just means you like a lot of heavy bass. I personally found that going from a mediocre sub to the real deal I thought something was wrong too. I eventually realized what I was missing was all the distortion from the crappy subs.

Good, clean bass shouldn't be up front and in your face. It's more subtle. The way my system is calibrated right now you really only notice the subs when I them off. Most of us do add about a 3db bump after running room calibration.

1 klipsch sub 10
1 klipsch sub 12
Would these be considered low end or mid level ?

The subs I told you about that were mediocre and distorted were Klipsch subwoofers.aa pair of RPW 10's. Klipsch are not known for their skills in making subs.

The subs I had weren't very good. Yours are a different model so I have no experience listening to them, but I have my opinion on Klipsch subs.

You have a budget in mind? Hsu has some pretty good pricing on their 10-12" subs.

How about the absolute best bang-for-the-buck, no matter what the buck is. LOL
I guess between 500 and 1000.
I think I paid like 250 and 300 for the klipschs off eBay

Is that budget for 1 or 2 subs?

Just for shits and grins, 2 of these would be my dream subs, but boy. Pricey.

These are what I have now and they sound very, very good. I like the flexibility they afford with variable tuning. Awesome subs. You may not need something that big tho. I have a large room.

This would be a step down from what I have, but still very good. With shipping a pair would put you over budget.

A pair of these would be pretty much on that 1000 dollar budget. Also a great sub, but small.

I might recommend getting 1 really good sub first, then save up for another. Your room size will determine how big a sub(s) you will need.

Sorry OP, almost all klipsch subs imo are entry level. Low end.

It's a matter of bass preference mostly. Whatever makes you happy. I think you can do much better for subs than those Klipsch subs, tho. I still would like at least dual subs; start with one good one then add another of the same later. Maybe something like this one for a good bang for the buck sub http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-3mk5HP.html

The klipschs have been good to me..lol
But y'all are right it's time to step up. That's the reason why I'm on this board and left all the other ones alone. You all seem to like to answer questions and to help people out.
I know and understand a pretty good bit about this stuff but I will agree there is a difference between the car stuff and home audio stuff. LOL. I held a few records with the car stuff years ago, but that's not really good for listening. LOL

AND YES I LOVE GOOD BASS....

I really think this package is going to get you the most bang for your buck. I bought them myself and am using them right now. Very powerful, versatile and tunable. The price on that page is for 2 of them. If you can swing it you won't be upgrading any time soon.

What would you recommend for an 18 by 20 room? Do y'all recommend two of the same size or maybe two different sized crossed over a little different. Right now I have a 12 and a 10 the 12 is getting more of the deeper bass (80) and the 10 is crossed over a little higher (150) for the more punchier bass.

Check my post above. If you love bass, that's what you want to shoot for.

It's easier to use two of the same subs IMO. How are you managing the two subs for separate crossovers?
