Hello
I have a qustion to you other guys with denon recivers.
I can hear a small clicking sound in the background when i raises or lowers the volym on the reciver coming out frome the speakers. Is it the dsp i hear when i do that..?
I hear it more on high volymes.
Someone else who noticed this and is it normal for denon..?
I have heard it frome an simulera one as mine denon avr-x7200wa in a store. thats why im asking if its something common.?

I can't hear it frome my sheaper yamaha amp.

/Peter

Did it do one click for each step of volume change? My $2,000 (almost) Cambridge Audio preamp does that but that's by design because it uses multiple relays that literally click but such costly scheme would not be used in an AVR. In any case I think you should email Denon, but likely have to elevated the case to their level two technical support. If you want a quick response, you may have to call them and insist on talking to the level two or senior tech people, their customer support who answer the first call will likely not have an answer for you. Please share your findings to help others.

Hi
I got this answer from a service center.

Hello

a quiet ticking noise seems to be normal, because volume level is electronic controlled.

If you want a check in our factory, please contact your dealer. He will transfer your unit to our service.

Frome another service center's

-Good afternoon Sir

Many thanks for you email.

We have spoken to one of our engineers on this one, they advise it is
completely normal.

This is likely to be the sound of the rotary encoder clicking.

-I think most if not all all electronic volume controls do this.

In the presence of music the discrete step change in volume causes a
discontinuity heard as a slight click or pop.

I don't know, can't say I've heard this complaint before on the Denons at least. I have the previous Denon flagship, the 4520, which I assume has a similar (but perhaps not exactly the same) volume control and it makes no such sounds. I also have a Denon 3808 and a few other brands of avr. They don't do that either.

Yes i think also it's a little strange, i dont hear nohting on my yamaha rx-v679.

Nobody else that has denon avr-x7200wa who can say if you hear a faint click when you raise or lower the volume. Barely noticeable but still there ..???

None of my 4 Denon and 2 Marantz made such noise either but the service rep's response does make some sense to me. The older models likely don't use the same scheme that involves the kind of encoder in the much newer 7200.

Still, haven't heard this complaint from other users of similar x200 and even x300 series from Denon, have you? I'd try that "official" Denon thread, particularly jdsmoothie, who is extremely familiar with such avrs.

I wonder if the OP has unique conditions of some sort, electrical service or speaker related?

None of my Denon make any sound when I change the volume.

I've used four Denon 3000 series, one 4000 series, one 5308, and one AVP-A1HDCI.

How long have you had the Denon-7200 and did you purchase it brand new?

From what Denon said it will be a waste of time to send it in.

Obviously they have used some type of motorized control, like this circuit or something on these lines.

Rather than a circuit along these lines.

Why they would to that on a high end receiver I have no idea. The second type of option is much to be preferred for many reasons.

Ok
So then it's on all the denon avr-x7200wa units. Not youst mine.

And not doing any god to ship it back for service.

Thanks so much to explain it to me, much appreciated

But still as you say strange that they do that....

Best regards
Peter

Some are silent, some clicks, the link below shows a couple of examples (just examples of the two types). The X7200WA being a flag ship model, probably have the detent type that clicks, and apparently costs a little more. If the one on the Denon is the smooth type, i.e. without detent, then it really shouldn't click, unless the click suppression feature is not working perfectly.

What? Those bastards used the cheaper silent ones on my Denon AVP-A1HDCI and AVR-5308CI? :D

Is the clicking coming from the AVR or the speakers?

I have a 7200 and haven't noticed it. I sit about 15 feet from it though. If I remember I'll check tonight.
