Speaker Positioning, Opinions Pls

I haven't worked in 4 months so I've had time on my hands. That always helps. ;)

I'll get some wedges under them and they won't want to slide at all. I could use anything pretty much. Then just glue a grippy pad on the surface. Think like the material on the underside of a mouse pad or something... Hell, shelf liner might work! It's soft and grippy. Hmmm...
So whats the deal you retired or something? I remember you saying something about vacation they owed you or something was more than expected. That means your retired?

Oh no. Just a nice, long vacation. I got a final paycheck from work that was a lot more than I expected, but not enough to retire on! Apparently I had some sick time and vacation pay left still. I thought I had used it all up. It was enough to buy an amplifier and a set of towers tho... :D

As of last Wednesday I am now 50% owner of a home inspection business. I start classes in about 2 weeks for my licensing. We have it all set up now. Got a website, we're an llc and we just did all the paperwork to get our taxes straight. Classes are gonna take a little while, but my partner is almost completely done with his. We're pretty excited about it. We have enough money to really start out strong.

Oh cool we are looking at buying houses now. Need a better home theater room that's all I care about. The rest she can make the decisions on. We'll hire you guys to do the inspection, we can make sure the house has a good and suitable home theater room.

It worked! Slightly burned one of my fingers though. Molten nylon isn't fun... Very minor though and now I have them both strapped down with straps I already had on hand. I'd still like to do a wedge underneath. I'm thinking either something smooth and leave the little feet on the speakers. Or take the little feet off and get something solid but soft. Like, rubbery. So the bottom of the speaker wouldn't want to slide at all.
You sure that nylon strap still has strength after you melted it like that?

Personally I think you should just go with in-walls or the SVS Prime elevation speakers in that situation, and repurpose the Ultra bookshelf speakers to another system.

I stood on one end and pulled, hard, on the other end. I put far more stress on it than it'll experience from the speaker. It's a good weld, it'll more than hold. There isn't a lot of weight on it either. That being said, I do like the idea of repurposing the bookshelfs and getting some Prime Elevation speakers. I still have my other receiver.

Tell you what, you type up a convincing explanation to my wife as to why I'm buying yet another pair of speakers and I'll run it by her... :p

In all seriousness though, I think the Prime Elevation speakers would be perfect for me. I'm gonna lay low for a little while tho. I just spent a lot of money on audio. Remember my other thread; "Apparently she thought I was buying one or the other. Not both" and I got both?

Yeah. Still kind of a sore spot with the missus. I don't blame her. I've gotten away with spending a lot of money over the last year or so on my audio. I'm gonna give her time to cool off a little. One thing that will definitely help is the price. They're a little more reasonable than all my other speakers.

I'd say ease off on the mrs and let er rip how it is for awhile. No reason to back pedal on surround speakers either. People learn to walk around furniture, why not speakers. I know your "stereo centric" but since you've got great surround speakers in place there's no reason to change them imo. That's just my opinion but I think surround speaker placement and quality of speaker is very important. The front and back of the room shouldn't be treated as two separate things. It's one system.

Holy cow! 6 pages of discussion. Pogre, your new setup is similar to mine and I think will work fine!
Heh. My threads tend to have some longevity. Check out my Rabbit hole thread. It's either due to me having some nutty ideas or just because I like to blab a lot... :p

Herbu! I don't see you around as often! I think I was still running SM55's and a pair of Klipsch subwoofers last time I saw you. Yes, I've come a long ways with lots of help from the guys here. I'm a happy camper now. :D

A legitimate use for the second set of binding posts on a bi wireable speaker!

They're not going anywhere. I was able to tie it to just the right tension so both sets of cables are all holding some of the weight. I'll get those ends trimmed up and capped, then maybe slice up a black work shirt and make a sock to hide the wires.
I wonder how much inductance you introduced to the signal cable with those few coils :p

I would think it might be measureable. I'm "mostly" kidding.....I mean a coil of wire is how you create an inductor.......but likely gonna be negligible.

Since this is the speaker positioning thread now I constantly fiddle, and experiment. I moved the SM 65 mains further apart by about a foot, and thus making the left the same distance away from the SM 65 center channel as the right SM 65, and it opened up the front Sound sound stage even more. Just amazing how all these little things play a factor sometimes big, sometimes small but it all adds up.

It is the little things for sure. I'm a nerd about symmetry and even use a laser pointer to aim my speakers. You can just eyeball them. But why!

Wow I wish I was smart enough to even know how to do that! Yeah I just go by sight and what I hear. They I second guess because, well, I am crazy!

I bought a laser pointer too! We're screwed... :p

Some of the more profound improvements I've made are just repositioning my speakers and subs. I absolutely love it when I get a marked improvement from doing simple little things (free things) like that.

Hey just as a side question. Are basements, finished basements ideal or not ideal for home theaters? See we are looking at houses finally, I told her she can have anything she wants in this house, anything, I just need a good room for my HT. That's honestly all I care about. We have seen some finished basements. What should I be looking at for a decent HT room in general and then basements? Thanks for any further help.

A little outside my knowledge bubble, but I'd say you'd want a rectangular shaped room and plan on throwing some rugs around. Maybe some basic and simple room treatments. I'd guess the biggest drawback to a basement HT room would be concrete floors and walls.

Thanks for the input, appreciate as always. See where is a huge problem I have right now with my room among many but this is the HUGE one I haven't been able to solve. The HVAC return vent is in the room where the HT is and it's sooooo loud. It just ruins, completely ruins the experience in the summer mostly every 7 to 10 minutes when the AC turns on. Heat isn't quite as big a problem because it runs much less than AC. So this return vent just kills the HT when it turns on and I have no idea how to minimize it.

That just plain sucks. I just replaced mine last year. It's nice and quiet now, but the old one was pretty loud. Didn't help that the compressor outside is on the other side of the wall, directly behind my tv...

The new unit solved my problem, but that's only something you do when it's time to replace. I got almost 20 years out of the old one.
