Does 7.1 only work with newer movies encoded w 7.1?

Or will all movies benefit from it? I wasn't sure if King Kong 2005 would really benefit from it.

It depends on your receiver. You can choose to "matrix" the additional surrounds using DSP modes that will add the additional channel information. You'd have to try it out to see whether or not you like the way it works.

I have the Yamaha HX-V681. What are my best options?

Personally I've found PLIIx(matrixing) to be a mess. IME if the disk is 7.1, play it back that way, and if the disk is 5.1, play it that way. Naturally ymmv. Peter jacksons Kong is one of my favorites.

Yeah PJ's Kong is unreal. What kind of setup do you watch it on, proector, speakers etc.

I found PLIIx and PLIIz to be not too bad, but it definitely doesn't sound as good as discrete so I tend to leave it on whatever original format it was also.

Hey Ohio guy. I'm running old school 7.3. JBL studio II system with 2pc 12+ and a Polk 505(long story lol) as a mid bass module. 58" plasma. If I had a dollar for every time I saw the T-Rex battle, I could upgrade my system! Saw skull island earlier this year. Pretty cool but not the same.

I don't mind matrixing movies to 9ch on 5ch or 7ch material, using various matrix options on my avr (Dolby/Neo:X/Audyssey DSX and combos)....works for me in my largish room in my seat....

Definitely not saying what works for anybody else, but I used to enjoy PLIIx until the time I heard one soundtrack that I know to have distinct sound a few feet behind the LP. I watched that scene in PLIIx and the whole rear sound field was turned into a blob. Like dipoles. YUK! I double checked with 5.1 and sure enough, all the discrete content was where it was supposed to be. After that, I checked a few others and gave up on it.

Can't say I look, or even remember, for a sound to be in a particular location much, I'd be hard pressed to remember a particular sound effect location with the number of movies I watch.

With music, while I do sometimes matrix, that can put things in odd places....sometimes fun sometimes not, depends on the music

Lol. Understood. Some of them just stick with me. Especially when the imaging in the rear sound field is as good as the front.
I like doin PLIIx for some music. Dubstep or NIN and things like that. Regular-ish music can end up with instruments in weird places like you said. Like a random drum in the back, or whatever. I hate that. Lol

Got an example of a soundtrack with memorable rear sound effects in 5.1 particularly? I may know it or even have it :)

Sure, make my brain cell work. Lol.
Two quick ones that come to mind are toy story 2(yeah I know). When Woody is in the display case after he's fixed the camera pans around and iirc the door and doll maker are clearly about 10' behind the LP.(been awhile but it's somewhere in there). And Bram stokers Dracula has a few, but the best one is when Van Helsing comes to meet Lucy. He's at the door, and she's writhing around in the bed. The camera switches between them and Lucy is clearly behind the listener. When I use PLIIx these scenes just don't work. If I wring out my brain cell I'll come up with more,(I promise)but dozing now, and on the spot. Lol. Also lone survivor has $hit everywhere. I check my Sheetrock for holes every time I watch that.
