loud do you listen at in -db or watts?

I am usually listen at about 7 feet from ear level and off center seated to the left. That's just a comfier spot to sit in.... I just moved my left speaker up 1 foot so I am now at 6 feet from ear level and notice less boom than I had before.

I listen at around -18 db hovering at around 2.5 - 3 watts with peaks at around 27 watts.

I would like to listen to at -8 or 9 db if I had a single home.

What about you?

Well I live in a condo so I listen at -28 to -30 most of the time. Late at night I turn it down to -35 and really, really late at night -40. I'd like to listen at -20 but just can't. Living in a condo with a fairly high performance home theater is like having a farrari and only being able to go 18mph. It's very sad, need to get a house!

What do you mean by 6 or 7 feet from ear level? Your speakers are high up on the ceiling or are you sitting 6 or 7 feet from the speaker? How are you measuring wattage in play?

In any case, I'm at 15 feet from my mains, movies usually in the -20 to -10 range these days, used to be more -10 to reference but I'm being nicer to my ears lately. Haven't lived in an apartment since the late 70s either.

I sit 12ft from my towers, they are 12ft apart toed in for a nice symetrical triangle. Sub is 10ft. Id like to put my sub farther away but I havent bought the necessary length cable to move it the distance it needs. I do have a center channel but it remains in the box as I find I dont need it and I prefer to run my 2ch amp. My mains image very well and voice for movies is clear and anchored on the display. I usually listen at around 65db for most of my programs. Movies around 80db and music, well, I have run with 100db peaks on occasion. Ok, often. :D

I started a thread to figure out how many watts I was listening to and several 100 replies later its still clear as mud. The consensus, if I can say there was a consensus, is that I'm listening at less than 1 watt of power. With that 1 watt or less, I'm generating about 85db SPL measured at my listening position. My listening position is exactly 60 inches, 5 feet, from my front right and left speakers. I'm in a near field listening position.

I usually listen at slightly less than that SPL, but with the new AVR and some improvements in music sources, I'm actually listening at a little higher levels than normal. I'll probably back it down soon.

I listen either 12 ft front row or 18 ft second row. The 18 ft sounds marginally better.

I vary my listening levels a lot. But I do settle in to concerts at concert level. A large symphony orchestra packs a tremendous punch and the odd peak can exceed 100 db, but not for long and most of the time it is way below that.

6 or 7 feet from the speaker (mid range driver) at ear level! Wattage is displayed in the Mcintosh meter.

9 feet and I generally settle between -15dB and -10dB.

Haven't measured the wattage, but going on the sensitivity ratings of my speakers, I'd be lucky to exceed 15w with my front and surround speakers and 36w with my heights.

My sub is probably consuming more power than my entire system combined, with a 150w rms/300w peak amplifier I've run into clipping a couple times.

I generally listen to music between 75dB and rarely 80dB. With classical I generally go a bit louder on the peaks, around 90-95dB. Can't figure out how someone could listen to music at 100dB. That's just uncomfortably loud. 90dB is my limit. Maybe it's just because I'm young and have good hearing, but at my listening levels, it should stay that way :)

I sit over 14 feet from my speakers. My mains have 11 feet between them and I sit equilateral in the triangle from both. I usually settle in around -30 for music when people are home, but I'll go to -10 or even -5 (not often) for a good song. Movies I generally watch at -15 or -20.

I sit 8 ft away. I have a db meter. It says I listen on average to a peak of around 90db. I got the meter because of a neighbor that was being unreasonable. Turns out I was well within the city ordinance at my property line. The local authority agreed with me. I intend to add some soundproofing to the window that is between the neighbor and I anyway. She just heard it while out in her yard one day and now is intent on focusing on my music. When the officer went over to talk to her, he could barely hear anything from here, and according to his meter, the ambient night time noise outside was higher than what could be measured from my home. Her AC unit was actually louder than anything she could ever hope to hear from me.

I believe you've given this piece of advice before. Its great stuff regarding neighbors.
"The most important thing to know about your neighbors is what is sounds like when they unlock their gun racks". :D

I salute your scientific approach to individual liberty: use a SPL to defend your turf. And invite the officer over for a cold one and a little Larry Carlton.:)

I was about to be real disappointed. I am a considerate and uneventful neighbor. I had just dumped a ton of work into this system, thinking now I was going to have to play it on eggshells. Total bummer. I have stepped outside before and I barely hear it. When all else fails, rely on one's rights. This woman has given me a hard time about everything. Turned me into the city about the paint on my eves. Inspector couldn't find anything but it causes me aggravation and worry at times. She needs to live in some HOA somewhere. She's old and miserable and her husband is a miserable sort. I am sure this is just her projecting her unhappiness outward. Lucky me!

My condolences on having a crabby neighbor. It sucks. I wish you the best in future dealings. Find something the old witch likes and then kill her with kindness. It works.

I also call people who fail to agree with me unreasonable. They just have to try harder. (Just kiddin').

Look, you have to recognize pure envy when you see one. I was going to say the same thing as @Bucknekked ; you have to invite her for a session. Kenny G, Barry White, I dunno...

EDIT: actually I think it's Vaya Con Dios!!

I have been nice to her. Even built her a tomato planter, gave her the soil, fertilizer and my method. Even though I am within my rights, I still intend to try and fix it further by treating the window.

And no, there will be no Barry White or Kenny G. Unless one of you guys wanna do your part of "the man code" as wingman. :D

my front L/R speakers are approx. 8.5 ft. away from each other. When I sit in the sweet spot I'm about 7.5 feet away from each speaker. I've never understood the Yamaha volume control, at -20 mine is pleasant, at +0 I worry about the neighbors complaining of noise. Small apartment. If I crank it higher in the + plus range maybe will damage the receiver or something else?

What is it you don't understand about the volume readings? That it's logarithmic due to it being in dB? Understanding of reference level? That there's a range of adjustment available beyond reference?

So since you dislike me asking apparently....what is it you dislike about me asking since you mentioned you didn't understand?
