Factory refurbished AVR

I am considering a low cost AVR to get my system going. Low cost now to put money towards better speakers and then come back and replace with better electronics. I have narrowed my choices to Cambridge, Integra, and Marantz and keeping final price to under $400. Accessories4Less is having a 20th anniversary sale with 20% off certain brands/models and even better deals on factory refurbished models.

At this time I am not interested in 4k or Atmos. I am trying to build 2.0 then 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 5.2 system and then upgrade electronics.

Questions: Is it OK to purchase factory refurbished AVRs? Is the factory refurbished older stepped-up model better overall than a lesser totally new model? Ex. factory refurbished Integra DTR-50.4 (MSRP $1599.99) vs new (but old model) Cambridge Azur 351R (MSRP $879.99) both on sale for $399.99 vs models that have just come out. I acknowledge that Cambridge unit is 5.1 and not 5.2, but that is not really a concern at this time.

Thank you in advance for any and all assistance.
Mike

Mike,

Honestly, not knowing what you consider "low cost". You can buy a generation or two older AVR and save some serious money and still have most of the most recent technologies.

I bought a generation old Marantz SR7009 that gives me what I'm looking for along with front wides for $1,100.00 a year and 5 months ago. Buying a refurbished AVR typically carries the same warranty so I see no reason why you shouldn't go for one.

I have purchased many refurbished AVR's from Acc4less in the last couple of years with no issues whatsoever. Since you are NOT too concerned with HDCP 2.2 compliance and/or Atmos, then it should be easy to find a real good deal. Focus on the features that you do want as that is very important. I recommend you take a look at Denon, Marantz, and/or Yamaha. All would be solid choices. Best wishes!

By low cost, I meant keeping final price under $400. You have answered my question in that the same warranty covers both new and old.

Thanks to both of you.

Usually the refurbished warranty is not as good as when new. But, they do offer extended warranties that can be purchased at a very reasonable cost. I usually buy the extended when I buy an AVR from them. The thing is though, I have had no issues whatsoever. They are also great to deal with and offer excellent customer service. Highly recommend!

Cheers,

Phil

Check, but many refurbished AVR's have only half the warranty of new. That said, if anything is going to go wrong it's probably going to happen in the first few hours, and chances diminish over the course of two years. Eventually the chances of failure start creeping back up. It's the nature of the beast. As complexity increases, opportunity for failure multiplies.

Units from Acc4Less seem to work mostly fine. And the few failures seem to get taken care of quickly, though there's always exceptions because we don't seem to live in a perfect world.

I should have been more specific, for me this means for Marantz. I have purchased refurbished Marantz AVR's in the past which came with full factory warranty. I can't guarantee this is true for all, or even for Marantz any longer, sorry about that.

Thank you, understood. All of you have helped ease my mind towards the refurbished models.

So now I am mainly looking at the Integra line at A4L as they have an additional 20% off their normal low factory refurbished prices. Specifically: 40.4 $319.99, 50.4 $399.99, and 30.7 $399.99. Also falling in this price range is the Marantz NR1504 $319.99 and NR1506 $349.99, and the Cambridge Azur 351R $399.99. Most of these models were released in 2012 with the 30.7 and 1506 being 2015. Any thoughts on these models?

I own a refurbished Denon from AC4L. Have had it several months now and no problems.

I'm considering a refurb SR7010 so I can use my SR7009 in a different room, I gain the Audyssey app, keep the front wides and can then move the SR5004 into the basement config.

EDIT: No love for the SR7010 either, only the SR7011 gets the app, rat bastards.

Check out Accessories4less today. The savings on Denon (same OEM as Marantz), which are highly recommended around here, are amazing. Their AVRX-3100W even comes with a 3 year warranty! (65% off list at $350- so it hits your target budget.) I'd bet you won't upgrade from it for a long time.

Definitely what I recommend you buy at this price point. ;)
