Not an Audiophyle...

I bought a house 3 years ago and finally got all the junk cleaned up out of the basement. I found a Bose Acoustimass 10 system in the basement. It appears that everything is there, but I do not have a receiver. I have never really considered setting up a home theater, but with the layout in the house, it lends itself to giving it a try. I currently have a 55" 3D TV in the basement and have always used simply TV audio. I am not really a huge fan of Bose, but with next to no budget to create a system, I thought I'd give it a try. I've found a JVC receiver that, according to online specs manuals, can send 100W per channel in the 5.1 setup (more to the stereo setup). The Acoustimass Module says requirements are "10-200W" for front speakers and "10-100W" for rear. Will the JVC RX 888 VBK receiver be enough to power the Bose system from 1996?

It'll work just fine. If you put 200W into the Bose it likely wouldn't be pleasant sounding anyways. The upper figure in max speaker wattage is usually a breaking point rather than anything useful. You can likely turn it up to a point of damage if you try hard enough, but the key is to simply turn it down when it starts to sound bad. Not the best of hi-fi systems but should work much better than your tv speakers...

GiftHorse,
Absolutely DO NOT repurpose the listed equipment above to create a nearly-free, better listening experience or you risk the following sequence of events:
- You will note the improvement over the TV's internal speakers, tell your family and friends, but enjoy only long enough to wonder "what if?"
- This will inevitably lead to "a plan", which in-short order will become "an order", and will be followed by "the wait".
- Each of these phases contain separate and distinct discomforts:
For example, your mind will be occupied by nearly infinite "branches and sequels" to the plan; you will suffer nagging and persistent "buyer's/click remorse" following the order; and be subject to deceptively painful repetitive stress injuries caused by "surely USPS/UPS/FedEx has updated my delivery status" during the wait.
Other significant risks include phantom budgets and rationalizations, which seem spouse proof and perfectly logical, but actually are not.

Save yourself, get out now and run away; upgrade-itis will NOT be cured in our lifetime!

Cheers,
XEagleDriver ;)

Rofl. Yes. EagleX has nailed it. Once you know, you can never go back. Even a lifestyle system will be an improvement, and it's the first step of thousands that make up the journey. Of course neither of us are serious, and it is what it is, so go for it.

You named the thread appropriately. ;)
I have never been a Bose fan either but, for free, kinda hard to pass up. :)

Well, since I posted it in another thread earlier anyways and still have the link handy....
Definition of audiophile (from Merriam-Webster dictionary) "a person who is enthusiastic about high-fidelity sound reproduction". So just posting here kinda makes you part of the club already....

Agreed. Just don't tell anybody you're an audiophile. Lol. Jk

I usually distance myself from that nomination....people have strange ideas of what it encompasses....
Also agreed. I think it comes from the stuffy self proclaimed golden eared pompous condescending jerks. The elitist attitude makes it hard for newbs to want to join in. Or you have total juvenile behavior like other ahem, forums.

'Audiophile' is almost a pejorative term. It conjures up things like people obsessing over silver cables and cable risers and that kind of nonsense, ie the shinier and more expensive your system is, the better it is. That is certainly not helped by elements of the audio press. The thing is, most people would view even those who post in this forum as similarly snobby with rarefied tastes in audio gear, even though we might consider ourselves somehow more 'down-to-earth'. Most of us who post here are 'audiophiles' by the traditional definition of the word, albeit from a different school of thought from what you see from more a subjectivist direction in audio.
