Messed up ohm question to avoid frying tweeters

Someone from Audiokarma suggested this:

"I may be mistaken but put wire leads of resistor onto speaker terminals then solder together..should be 4 ohm now..the resistor is no different than a speaker both are 8 ohms"

This next one is from my new best friend (he sent me his phone number), yes same guy that seemed sketchy and unbalanced. A wealth of knowledge for sure!

"i give advice for things it took years to learn , and hopefully you pass things on --- one was you know your speaker company was bought by Japan/China made when all your speakers have a huge tune port in the front -- Ar and Advent was bought by Audiovox , but Advent then became BOSTON ACOUSTICS --- now Polk /Definitive Technology has bought D+M who is Denon ,Marantz and Boston Acoustics---- Complaints on E-bay about NEW stereos still having the HDMI problem --I used to run Surface mount machines for SANDERS in N.H. who was taken over by Lockheed Martin --Good bye jobs, but we had no chip problems then and had the the 80 pin ball Technology 20 years ago -- I could always move on due to high security clearance with Honeywell and G.E. but it did not keep the jobs in Massachusetts ... Once they let millions of Russians in all jobs went to Texas -- they sell 100,000 newspapers in Houston alone in the Russian Language --- I won't say this anymore since I got a warning from a friend about U-tube being checked !!! I want my 65 retirement money , hard to get that these days --- Word of mouth is the only way , be careful of U-Tube"

That guy needs his meds upped. Thought block and fight of ideas exhibited above is classic for the condition. That scribe is diagnostic.
You need to read his latest response....still shaking my head!

Yes, that would make it 4 ohm. However half the power would be lost in the resistor and the woofer would again be down 3db. So you would have to pad the tweeter down 3db. The speaker would then be 3db down compared to the good one. So again this is not practical.

That is an absolutely classic schizophrenic diatribe.
Yeah, he's nut's for sure!

Thanks for the input on using a resistor. I called Klipsch and they do have NOS. They have to transfer warehouses before they can distribute but looks like they'll be able to ship me exactly the same driver so I bit the bullet.

Appreciate all the help.

That would be your best option. I would put the other driver up for sale in eBay. You will probably recoup a good deal of your expense.

You might want to buy another driver, as the other one may be right behind it. The other alternative is to see if they have reconing kits. If they have you could keep one of those on hand.

Yes, re-sell on ebay. The seller actually offered to allow me to return them if I ate the shipping both way's but he was so accommodating in shipping out immediately AND upgrading free to two day shipping I just didn't have the heart. Re-sell it is.

I would have loved to have purchased two NOS drivers but i'm having to hide this purchase from the wife, I'll try and sneak another in later...lol.

As far as a re-coning kit, great idea, i'll have to inquire.

After the replacement, no heavy cranking. Even though I wasn't anywhere near where that woofer should have blown i'll be a bit more cautious. Funny thing is I had MK's (IA's) in front prior, that would/will take anything and everything you throw at them. I had moved them to surrounds when I picked up the C-4's. I'm pretty sure the setting's in my B&K receiver also has all 5 speakers set as small too so I know I wasn't over-driving the woofer, hopefully it was just a fluke blowing that driver....that or the NIN SACD just sent too much distortion and they couldn't handle it if there is such a thing.
