Need help with my first setup

I am looking for something to listen to music and watch movies in my bedroom with. Probably a 2 channel or 5.1 but I have no experience with home audio. I want something with decently clear audio and some bass. I have a budget of around $500. I know it's not much but would anyone be willing to point me in the right direction? Thank you.

In that budget, I would go for a 2 channel setup, a couple of good bookshelf speakers and a receiver. I would be looking for a used AVR off of ebay or craigslist. For simple stuff, you don't need all the bells and whistles of a new AVR.

If I could stretch the budget, I would aim for the Emotiva BasX S10 sub -- the product is still new, however they really look interesting to me and Emotiva is finally going with ported subs.

NXG 4.1 discontinued there are 2 used. They are small with beautiful piano finish and they can go loud. They are heavy and well made. No cheapo STUFF. 90 bucks. The center speaker is fantastic for movie/TV dialog and can be found on ebay once in a while for under 70 bucks.
